Amy Kelman, daughter of
Barry and Janice Kelman,
will share her bat mitzvah
with Ekaterina Burdo of
Moscow on Saturday at Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek.
Ekaterina is the daughter
of Leonid and Rita Burdo.
Burdo applied for an exit visa
in June 1979 and was refus-
ed December 1979. A
geologist, Burdo was not
allowed to emigrate because
Soviets charge he had access
to state secrets.
Burdo's parents immigrated
in 1972 to Israel. When his
father died in 1981, Burdo
asked Soviet authorities to let
him attend the funeral. He
was refused:
Amy has written letters to
the Burdo family in Moscow
and to Leonid's mother in
Israel, but has not received a
response.
