ook at my battle scars,"
said Earle Mostyn as
he showed hands cut
during the days corned beef,
pastrami, etc. used to be
sliced by hand . . . This was
the deli era of Earle Mostyn,
now with his own insurance
agency.
But the day and evening
belonged to Irene and Nate
Light who were honored for
their magnificent work on
behalf of City of Hope .. .
Members of the Sophie and
Harry Hoffman Chapter,
which they founded and nam-
ed, relatives and friend's,
crammed into the Colony
Park clubhouse on 12 Mile
recently to see them receive
the first annual Natalie Eps-
tein Memorial Award, titled
after one of the group's most
diligent workers.
About 30 coules belong to
the Sophie and Harry Hoff-
man Chapter, but around 80
attended the dinner to see
Irene and Nate get the first
plaque. -
Affair was to have been at
the larger Laurel Woods
clubhouse only a short
distance away, but even
though the City of Hoper's
check was cashed, when the
date arrived, they were told,
"Too many!" . . . Perhaps
former owner Mel Kaftan
should tell the owners now
some facts of life . . . especial-
ly when it concerns a fine,
charitable organization like
City of Hope.
Evening was put together
by Elaine and Earle Mostyn
(of course he spent most of the
evening behind a counter)
and Bernice and Al Kessner
. . . Various members made
much of the food . . . and Ron
Forman of Bread Basket Deli
donated vegetable salad for
everyone . . . Chapter presi-
dent Henry Averbuck was
emcee.
It was fitting that Irene and
Nate received the first
Natalie Epstein Award .. .
Their over 20 years of
dedicated service in the fight
against catastrophic diseases
is never forgotten . . . and be-
ing close friends of the late
Sophie and Harry Hoffman
made it a touching evening.
RUTHIE ROTT, 14 - year-
old daughter of Carole and
Shel Rott, was recent winner
of writing contest by Detroit
Auto Dealers Association .. .
one of five high school
students in the metro area to
receive a $500 prize . . . She
is a freshman at North Far-
mington High . . . and com-
peted with over 200 other
students.
CONGRATS . . . to Pauline
Samson . . . on her birthday.

man Hall, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

MACOMB MALL, Gratiot
and Masonic (13 1/2 Mile) in
Roseville, always seems to
come up with something
other shopping centers say,
"Why didn't we think of
that?" . . . Next is a free vi-
sion screening, Jan. 28, 8 a.m.
to 6 p.m. . . . It's to promote
eyesight awareness with a
series of quick tests determin-
ing signs of visual deficiency,
glaucoma, cataracts and
other eye disorders . . . No
charge.

LOOKING BACK On Col-
umns Of Yesteryears .. .
APRIL 26, 1974 . . .
"Overheard on a used car lot
by Les Ball . . . 'Let me put it
this way,' dealer told a fellow
who was trying to sell him his
old car, 'if your car were a
horse, it would have to be
shot? "
JUNE 28, 1974 . . .
"Fatigued by a hard day at
the office, a father found the
racket being made by his two
sons too much for his jangled
nerves and sent them up-
stairs to their room after a
severe scolding . . . The next
morning he found this note
pinned to his bedroom door
. . . 'Be good to your children
and they will be good to you.
Yours truly, God.' "
