piano teacher, who studied
under Rollin for 10 years and
often seeks her mentor's ad-
vice on teaching. "She has
taught me how to express
myself through the music I in-
terpret," Sherman said.
Rollin's first five pieces of
music, "Ballet Beauties,"
"Jazzy Moves," "Motown
Rag," "Tango Tangle" and
"Tap Time," were published
in 1985. Today, she has had 26
of her pieces published. They
include: "City Slicker," "Back
Beat Blues," "Devil's Night
Dance," "Baroque Bop" and
"Tightrope Walker Waltz."
"I take pride in the fact that
I write in really diverse
styles," Rollin said. "Two
other pieces that I wrote,
`Valse Brillante' and `Danse
Romantique,' so well capture
the Romantic era which is
what I am trying to do. I am
trying to have students have
the experience of playing
Chopin, but most are not
quite ready to play him. So, I
give students the opportuni-
ty to play something that
sounds difficult and really
captures the Romantic style."
"A student like Lori (Sher-
man), who mastered the
`Chopin Waltz in- A minor'
when she was 11 years old, is
unusual," said Rollin. "Most
students don't even attempt
to play any waltzes until they
are in high school."
Not only does she teach
students, but she instructs
teachers as well. Last August,
Rollin was featured in an in-
structional video for piano
teachers. "Videos have
become the way of the world
now," noted Rollin. "Myklas
Music Press asked me to
make a video for them to
distribute to piano teachers
nationwide. So, I presented a
55-minute workshop for piano
teachers which was filmed in
my home by Booth Com-
munications."
The video is strictly for
teachers to view as they look
at the sheet music (which
comes with the tape). Rollin
discusses and plays her pieces
while giving the teachers
tips.
Rollin has received a lot of
recognition for her music
writing abilities. The Na-
tional Federation of Music
Clubs, an organization that
unites piano students
throughout the country,
honored Rollin by including
her pieces, "Tango Tangle"
and "Ballet Beauties," on its
national playlist. The playlist
is used for a festival that
takes place once a year where
students from all over the
country get ratings for the
purpose of motivating and en-
couraging them in their
music studies. Each student

Piano teacher Lori Sherman plays her mentor's latest piece.

has to play a composition by
an American composer on the
required national playlist.
Those two pieces are her big-
gest sellers.
Last year, Rollin was com-
missioned by the Michigan
Music Teachers Association
(MMTA) and the Music
Teachers National Associa-
tion (MTNA) to compose a
concert-level piece for solo
piano. Her piece is entitled
"City Suite." It will be used in
a competition for up-and-
coming artists as a composi-
tion by a Jewish composer.
Early last year, Rollin per-
formed "City Suite" at a
beneift recital for Detroit
Musicians League (DML).
"That was kind of a double
reward because not only did I
receive recognition as a
pianist, but I also had the op-
portunity to introduce my
piece to the DML and the
Detroit community," noted
Rollin.
"I really enjoy writing; it is
the real essence of my being
able to express myself," said
Rollin. "Writing is just a
wonderful means of self ex-
pression."
"I am in awe of many com-
posers of today," noted Rollin.
"I think Burt Bacharach is a
great writer. He is a composer
who has traveled from decade
to decade writing in various
styles, from musical and
movie scores to pop music,
successfully."
Rollin also thinks Stevie
Wonder is a great composer.
"I know that many people
would not dare to compare
composers who write pop
music to those who have writ-
ten classical, but my personal
feeling is that great music
can appear in many music
styles."
When Rollin is not teaching
or composing, she enjoys per-
forming. "The biggest thrill

came when I played at Or-
chestra Hall a few years ago,"
she said. "The acoustics there
are pretty incredible."
She has also appeared at
the Grosse Pointe War
Memorial, Varner Hall (at
Oakland University) and
Meadow Brook Hall.
Rollin and her husband, Ir-
win Krinsky, have been in-
volved in writing music for
commercials for both televi-
sion and radio. "We really
love being able to produce
commercials in the comfort of
our home," said Rollin, who
recently built a special studio
in her new home.
4
Some of her clients are ABC
Warehouse, Saturn Corp.,
Computer Horizons, Elmar's
Furs, Knoppow's and
Michigan HMO. Nineteen of
their commercials have aired.
"The first time I heard one 4
of our commercials, I was
driving in my car listening to
my radio," said Rollin. "It was
really exciting. I find writing
music for commercials fun
and challenging because
sometimes in a 30-second
commercial, you can tell a
whole story through your
music."
Occasionally, Rollin writes
lyrics as well as the music for
commercials. "I have become
a lyricist," she said. "Agencies
4
would give me the concept of
what they want to say, and I
would put it into lyric form."
In terms of production,
Rollin and Krinsky do just
about everything from start
to finish: They compose, ar-
range, record and Krinsky
even sings on some of the
commercials.
Rollin's greatest achieve-
ment as a pianist came when
she was doing her master's
degree studies at Oakland
University. "I won the concer- 4
to competition for two con-
secutive years," she said. "It
