She went for a much more im- portant reason: to carry the Torah. Carefully walking up and down each row, Leah paused at every other step so con- gregants could touch the tiny Torah in her arms. Then she sat down quietly, her hands resting in her lap. The service continued. A little girl carrying the Torah is nothing out of the or- dinary during Young Family Services at Temple Emanu- El. In fact, the purpose of the services is to actively involve children ages 2 to 7 and their families in celebrating the Sabbath, according to nursery school teacher and Resource Center coordinator Sue Stettner. Stettner has been involved with the Young Family Ser- vices since the temple im- plemented the program in 1986. She helped adapt the services from a similar format used at a New Jersey congregation. The program includes the basic Shabbat prayer service with music, drama and a message. Stettner works with the parents' committee and temple Rabbi Lane Steinger to present a play or puppet show illustrating Jewish values in the TDrah portion of the week. "One woman recently told me she had never been so close to the Torah," she says. "All these years, and she finally touched the TDrah. She was so moved." Song is an integral part of the program. A recent service included "David Melech Yisrael" with all the hand motions. Even a man who hardly fit the 2- to 7-year-old category was enthusiastical- ly pounding the mortar and raising the flags of the great Temple.
