Soviet Jewry, and Morris

"I was invited to a social
dinner on Monday evening, at
the apartment of Edgar
Bronfman (president of the
World Jewish Congress),"
Cardin said. "I did not know
who the other guests were, or
the agenda. The discussion
was a wide ranging one; it in-
cluded the issue of direct
flights, but also the issue, of
resettlement, the question of
Jewish cultural identity in
the Soviet Union, and the

issue of how we should sup-
port glasnost and perestroika
in the Soviet Union. There
was no 'deal' discussed."
Some Jewish activists wor-
ried that the flap may slow ef-
forts to develop a unified ap-
proach to a possible Jack-
son-Vanik waiver.

AJCongress
Plans To Argue
For Roe v. Wade

This week marks the an-
niversary of the landmark
Roe v. Wade decision legaliz-
ing abortion. The event
sparked large anti-abortion
protests in Washington — and
a new surge of activity by a
number of Jewish groups.
"What we are arguing, at
least in part, is that uphold-
ing the Roe v. Wade decision
involves a basic question of
religious freedom," said Lois
Waldman, co-director of the
Commission on Law and So-
cial Action of the American
Jewish Congress.
"Roe v. Wade effectively
permits women to make deci-
sions based on their own
ethical and religious convic-
tions. For instance, under
Jewish law, there are situa-
tions in which therapeutic

abortion is mandated; any at-
tempt to prevent that is a
violation of religious
freedoms!"
But the Christian Right,
Waldman suggested, has pre-
empted the religious dimen-
sion of the abortion argu-
ment. "They have stolen the
march on the pro-choice
religious community by usur-
ping the idea that they are
the only ones concerned
about life and religion and
the family. In fact, the pro-
choice community has just as
much, if not more, concern
about these important
things."
The Justice Department, in
an unusual move, has entered
the current Supreme Court
case on the side of the anti-
abortion forces. But Jewish
groups, including the AJ Con-
gress, the American Jewish
Committee, the National
Council of Jewish Women and
the Union of American He-
brew Congregations are writ-
ing a brief that argues that
any new limits to abortion
would represent a blow to
religious pluralism '— as well
as a very real medical danger
to women seeking abortions.

FALL WINTER
MEN'S & WOMEN'S
APPAREL

But for a group of self-
professed Jewish "yuppies," it
was business as usual as they
grappled with a darker side of
the the city.
In what planners hope will
be a model for other Jewish
groups, the District of Colum-
bia Jewish Community
Center has developed a series
of programs designed to get
the Jewish community in-
volved in direct service to
inner-city residents.
In one program, volunteers
spend one day a month feed-
ing the homeless. In another,
volunteers visit elderly Jew-
ish patients, and children at
D.C. General Hospital — a
public inner city hospital
where abandoned newborns
are not uncommon.
But the most exciting ele-
ment of the Center's outreach
efforts involves the "Teen
Mentor Program," in which
volunteers are matched with
teenaged mothers from the
inner city.
