The Center for Judaic
Studies at Wayne State
University, a cooperative ef-
fort of the United Jewish
Charities of the Jewish
Welfare Federation and
Wayne State University, will
bring Prof. Jonas Greenfield
to campus and the communi-
ty for two illustrated lectures.
A native Detroiter, Prof.
Greenfield is professor of an-
- cient Semitic languges at the
Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. After receiving
his Ph.D. degree at Yale
University where he taught
on the language of the
Mishnah, Prof. Greenfield
taught at Brandeis, UCLA
and University of California,
Berkeley.
A philologist, Prof. Green-
field has written extensively
on ancient Near Eastern
languages and has also serv-
ed as editor of the Jewish
Publication Society Bible
Translation Series, to which
he contributed a translation
of the Book of Psalms.
He has lectured extensive-
ly and taught as a visiting
professor at leading univer-
sities and theological

seminaries in the U.S. and
Europe.
Prof. Greenfield will give
two talks during his stay at
Wayne State University. His
first lecture, which is il-
lustrated, is co-sponsored
with the Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies and is entitl-
ed, "The Dead Sea Scrolls —
40 Years Later." It will be held
on Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the
LaMed Auditorium of the
United Hebrew Schools.
His illustrated second lec-
ture,. "The Nahal Hever Ar-
chive: The Life of a Jewish
Woman in the Second Cen-
tury C.E.," will demonstrate
how the discovery of an an-
cient document casts new
light on the status of Jewish
women in antiquity. This lec-
ture will be held on Feb. 6 at
3 p. m . at
470 Manoogian Hall, Wayne
State University.

Midrasha Begins Lecture
Series: Torah Li'Shma

The Midrasha: College of
Jewish Studies, a division of
United Hebrew Schools, will
offer a series of fciur lectures
for the winter/spring
semester on Sundays at the
Midrasha: Torah Li'Shma —
Learning for the Sake of
Learning, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
at the Sigmund and Sophie
Rohlik Bulding of the UHS.
Subsequent lectures will be
held March 5, March 26 and
April 9. The community is in-
vited at no charge.
The Feb. 5 lecture, co-
sponsored by the Center for
Judaic Studies of Wayne
State University, will feature
Dr. Jonas Greenfield, pro-
fessor of ancient Semitic
languages at Hebrew Univer-
sity, Jerusalem. His topic is
entitled, "The Dead Sea
Scrolls — 40 Years Later." The
illustrated lecture will review

the history and interpreta-
tion of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
On March 5, "Thomas
Mann and the Jewish World"
will be discussed by Dr. Guy
Stern, Distinguished Pro-
fessor of Romance and Ger-
manic" Languages, Wayne
State University.
On March 26, Maj. Gen.
Shlomo Gazit, political
analyst and Detroit Zionist
Federation scholar-in-
residence, will speak on "The
Reality of a Palestinian State
— A Step lbward Peace?"
Corinne Stavish, lecturer in
Speech Communication at
Wayne State University and
Lawrence Institute of
Technology will speak on
"The Theatre of the Heart:
The History and Develop-
ment of the Yiddish Theater."
