The French ambassador to Syria, Alain Grenier, pre- sented the formal request to the Syrian authorities in Damascus on Dec. 27, Nazi- hunter Serge Klarsfeld disclosed recently. Syria has stubbornly de- nied for years any knowledge of Brunner's whereabouts, contrary to all evidence, in- cluding an interview Brunner gave to a Chicago Tribune reporter in Damascus last year. Brunner, 76, one of Adolf Eichmann's top aides, has been hiding out in Syria since the early 1950s. A French court convicted him in absen- tia of war crimes in 1954 and sentenced him to death. West Germany asked Syria for Brunner's extradition in 1984. The Syrians claim that they know of no such person living in Syria. Klarsfeld said that if Brun- ner is extradited, he could be tried in either France, West Germany or Greece, since he is wanted in all of those coun- tries. With Israel's participa- tion, the three nations could set up an international court to try Brunner, he said. 553-7111 Sale 30-50% Off France Asks Syria For Nazi 2 LOCATIONS 683-4990 LOCAL NEWS 1" Nutrition Topic Of Health Event A program on nutrition and health, sponsored by Harper- Grace Hospitals, will be held Tuesday at the Southfield Civic Center at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served, or in- dividuals can also bring their own lunches.
