Born in 1939, Lester, the son of a Baptist minister, liv- ed in the Midwest and the South and received a B.A. degree in English from Fisk University in 1960. He is the only University of Massachu- setts faculty member to be presented with all three of the university's most prestigious faculty awards. In 1986, the council selected him as the Massachusetts State Pro- fessor of the Year. A veteran of the Civil Rights movement, his photo- graphs of that movement were included in an exhibi- tion at the Smithsonian In- stitution and are part of the permanent photographic col- lection at Howard University. Since 1968 he has publish- ed 15 books which have been translated into seven languages. Among the awards these books have received are the Newberry Honor Medal, the Lewis Car- roll Shelf Award, National Book Award Finalist; American Library Associa- tion Notable book, and New York Times Outstanding Book. Jewish Birth Classes Set Adat Shalom Synagogue, Sinai Hospital and Jewish Experiences For Families will co-sponsor a six-part discus- sion series and certified Lamaze program at 7 p.m. Thursdays, March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and April 6. Each program will begin with a half-hour segment on Jewish parenting. Couples will explore Hebrew names, brit milah, baby naming, and the variety of concerns new parents have about raising happy, healthy babies. Discus- sions will be led by Rabbis Efry Spectre and Elliot Pachter of Adat Shalom; Dr. Jeffrey Devries, pediatrician; and Dr. Gail Berkove, psycho- logist and specialist in fami- ly therapy and parenting. Two hours of Lamaze in- struction by Sinai Hospital personnel follow the discus- sions. The classes prepare ex- pectant parents for labor and delivery, teach relaxation and breathing techniques, body mechanics, comfort measures, birthing options and post- partum information. Haber Fund Established The American ORT Federa- tion has set up a special William Haber ORT Scholar- ship Fund to honor the memory of its president, Dr. William Haber, who died Dec. 30. This fund will help needy young people receive educa- tion in ORT programs world- wide.
