All-Jewish TV Station
Planned in Connecticut

A

corporation in Con-
necticut is planning
to launch what it
believes will be the first
television station in the coun-
try devoted to Jewish-
oriented programming.
The nature of the content,
according to Michael Vlock,
president of the Bridegways
Communications Corp. of
Westport, Conn., will be
cultural rather than
religious.
"We want to attract a
general viewing audience,"
Vlock said. "We want to make
sure people know it will not
be the Jewish version of the
`700 Club? "
But the main viewing
targets will still be the three
million Jews living in the
New York metropolitan area,
northern New Jersey and
Connecticut.
Programming will vary, in-
cluding areas such as news,
current events, talk shows,
movies, sitcoms, business,
science, politics, travel,
children's programs and
education.
Vlock said he is also con-
sidering a program for shut-
ins and the elderly, which
would offer access to a
religious service.
"The station is mandated to
be a resource for the Jewish

community, as well as an in-
teractive vehicle for other
cultural groups," Vlock
stressed.
For the first few years,
about 20 percent to 30 per-
cent of the shows will be
original programs produced
by Bridgeways, Vlock said.
The bulk will be acquired
from syndicators.
Vlock estimated that the
total cost of establishing the
commercial televison station
would run some $10 million.
Private investors have rais-
ed and spent $3 million for
the construction of the sta-
tion's transmitter and anten-
na, in Seymour, Conn. An ad-
ditional $500,000 has been
raised to finance the develop-
ment of the new format.
Bridgeways has been in-
volved in a 10-year pursuit to
construct a station, but Vlock
and company generated the
Jewish station idea last year.
In order the preserve the
company's license from the
Federal Communications
Commission — granted eight
years ago — while they waited
for construction and zoning
permits, Bridgeways started
WBCT-TV, Channel 43, a
home-shopping channel.
Now, Vlock hopes to shift
the Jewish channel into gear
by Passover of 1989, although
he cautions that May or June
may be a more accurate
estimate.

'Fairfax Tales' To Be
Presented At Center

The Fairfax Tales is a
40-minute play based on
stories collected by the late
anthropologist, Dr. Barbara
Myerhoff, author of Number
Our Days and co-director of
the Academy Award-winning
documentary film, Number
Our Days, will be presented
Feb. 8 at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center.
Before her death in 1985,
Dr. Myerhoff was working in
the Fairfax area of Los
Angeles, gathering stories
from Chasidim, Holocaust
survivors, refuseniks, elderly
volunteers and others. It was
her wish to have these tales
dramatized as a "storytelling
performance."
Dr. Meyerhoff asked her col-
league, Arthur Strimling, an
award-winning actor and
director, to undertake the
task of telling these stories.
He is artistic director of the
Ballad Theater, which has

been heard on National
Public Radio and toured ex-
tensively throughout the U.S.
and Europe.
The program is co-
sponsored by Shir Tikvah and
is free to the public. For infor-
mation, call the Jewish
Center, 661-1000, ext. 341.

Kosher Dinner
Theater Due

The first kosher dinner
theater at the Maple/Drake
Jewish Community Center
will take place Feb. 18.
The evening will include a
complete dinner and show by
Nancy Gurwin Productions.
It will be a salute to Judy
Garland called: Over The
Rainbow.
There is a fee, and reserva-
tions are a must. Call the
Center, 661-1000, or N _ ancy
Gurwin, 354-0545.
