The Lyric Chamber Ensem-
ble will present a piano
festival at Orchestra Hall
Jan. 28 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 5 at
3:30 p.m.; and Feb. 12 at
3:30 p.m.
In addition to the perform-
ed selections, there will be a
discussion about the develop-
ment of the piano, differences
in piano styles and stories
about great pianists of the
past. Time will be allowed for
a Q and A period, and the
listeners will have an oppor-
tunity to meet the artists
following each program.
There will be solo and duo
performances on one, two, and
four pianos by Joseph Gurt,
Michael Gurt, Fedora
Horowitz, Mishch Kottler,
Louis Nagel, Cynthia Raim,
Flavio Varani, Karen Walwyn
and Richmond Browne.
Browne is professor of music
at the University of Michigan
in Ann Arbor.
The Gurts represent two
generations of piano tradi-
tion. Both are Julliard
graduates. Joseph Gurt is
presently on the faculty of
Eastern Michigan University.
Michael Gurt began his
studies with his father and
subsequently graduated from
the University of Michigan.
He is the winner of several
prestigious awards both here
and abroad, including the
Gina Bachauer International
Piano Competition.
Horowitz is the founder and
artistic director of the LCE.
Kottler has been a mentor
to pianists in this area for
over half a century. Among
his many students who
established prominent and
successful musical careers
was Raim, the youngest
soloist ever to perform a com-
plete concerto with the DSO.
Nagel has appeared many
times in solo recitals, and
with major orchestras. He is
on the faculty of the Univer-
sity of Michigan.
Varani is on the faculty at
Oakland University where he
is artist-in-residence.
Walwyn is studying for her
doctoral degree at the Univer-
sity of Michigan under Dr.
Nagel.
