The "most onerous burden" of the American decision, predicted the magazine, may be that, to Palestinians, the U.S. has now "formally and explicitly assumed the func- tion of deus ex machina." "Washington may demur, insisting this is not. the case . . . But these protests will fall on deaf ears in the Middle East. They will seem only coy — especially in view of the significance Arafat plainly ascribes to what the United States refers to only as a dialogue. He has told his people that the new diplo- matic contact is tantamount to the endorsement of a Palestinian state." March 2.12, 1989 . The question was the focus of a debate in the letters col- umn of the November issue of The Jewish Observer, the Agudath Israel magazine. It makes for fascinating reading because it touches on whether American Jews should seek a low profile in the general community, as ad- vocated by Agudath Israel, or a higher profile, as. urged by the Lubavitch Chasidic move- ment, which presents public menorah displays in every state. Gershon Steinberg of Chicago wrote to take excep- tion to an article in a previous issue of the magazine that suggested that public menorah displays "arouse the hatred and derision of the gentile world?' The article also argued that public menorahs should be discour- aged since they satisfy no par- ticular mitzvah. Steinberg, an advocate of the Lubavitch position, asserted that Jews have a duty to display the menorah as a way to fulfill the mitzvah of proclaiming God's name to the world. Rabbi Chaim Dov Keller, Rosh Yeshiva of the Telshe yeshiva in Chicago, and author of the original article, responded that there is no halachic requirement for displaying a menorah on public property. cf ■ e°1i‘ the .,‘s and UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS For reservations and further information: 352-1050 UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS • 21550 W.
