Call The Jewish News 1 354-6060 Washington (JTA) - Natan Sharansky, the former Soviet prisoner of conscience, warned last week that the Reagan administration's deci- sion to attend a human rights conference in Moscow in 1991 could result in a major public relations coup for the Soviet Union. "With all those nice changes that are taking place, the Soviet Union is still very far from those norms of civil- ized societies," Sharansky told reporters at the White House, after a meeting with President Reagan. Reagan presented Sharan- sky with identical congres- sional gold medals for himself and his wife, Avital, who re- mained home in Jerusalem to take care of their two daugh- ters, 1-month-old Chana and 2-year-old Rachel. The medals, printed with the words "Let My People Go," in Hebrew and English, featured a picture of the Western Wall, were author- ized by Congress on May 13, 1986, three months after Sharansky was allowed to leave the USSR in an East- West prisoner exchange. Sharansky said he had not expressed his criticism of the Moscow conference to Reagan, because the Oval Of- fice ceremony was short, but had given his views to the State Department. Prisoner Group To Hold Meeting Washington - The Interna- tional Coalition for Jewish Prisoner Services, sponsored by B'nai B'rith International, will play host to an interna- tional conference at B'nai B'rith world headquarters in Washington, D.C., in January.
