NEWS I Mass Mutual welcomes Michael B. Bennett. ■.■ `Jew' Definition Gets Explanation London (JTA) — The next edition off the Concise Oxford Dictionary will continue to carry an offensive definition of "Jew," but it will add an ex- planation in precise terms why it is considered offensive. S.K. Tulloch, the dic- tionary's senior assistant editor, gave that assurance in a letter responding to re- presentatives from the Coun- cil of Christians and Jews. The dictionary contains two definition of "Jew!' One is "person of Hebrew descent; person whose religion is Judaism . ." The second definition is a "person who drives hard bargains, usurer . ." Tulloch pointed out that the current edition describes the definition as "derogatory," and marks it "R" for "racial- ly offensive!' The next edition, she said, would explain that the offen- sive definition "arose from historical associations of Jews as moneylenders in medieval England!' But according to Tulloch, there are no grounds to remove the offending defini- tion from the dictionary. Dictionaries, she told the council's director, Canon Jim Richardson, "try to record the language as it is used, not as we (or someone else) would like it to be used." She agreed the definition Richardson complained about was offensive, "but that is not grounds for omitting it." Nor does its inclusion "imply that we condone its use in this sense," she said. Agency Official Blasts Israel Jerusalem (JTA) — A Jewish Agency official ac- cused the government last week of failing to provide the basic needs of new im- migrants, and said that both the establishment and Israeli society "torture" the im- migrants and only pay lip ser- vice to the idea of immigra- tion. Uri Gordon, who heads the agency's immigration and ab- sorption department, said the government has failed to im- plement the agreement it signed with the agency last year to take over the absorp- tion machinery. Gordon cited the long wait for housing and employment the 13,000 immigrants who arrived in Israel last year had to endure. POST-HOLIDAY PURCHASING POWER SALE!
