"We're a high earning and
high-spending group," Kestin
says of English speakers, or
Anglo-Saxons as they are call-
ed in Israel. "For the Israeli
advertiser, we're a metziah
(bargain)."
Kestin is both a realist and
an optimist about Israel.
"We're a nation, a state. We're
more than just a political
argument," he says.
Over the years he has tried
to introduce to outsiders an
Israel shorn of its mythic
garb. His long-running "From
Karkur" column in Present
Tense magazine depicted
Israel from an everyman's
point of view.

ly: "If this paper is the same
six months from now, it will
be a disaster."
More impressive to readers
than Kestin getting the paper
off the ground at all was
Kirschen's defection from the
Jerusalem Post after 16 years
as house cartoonist. Defense
correspondent Hirsch Good-
man and writer and editor
Louis Rappaport, who had al-
ready left the Post, now ap-
pear in The Nation.
Kirschen would not discuss
if a more lucrative contract
brought him to The Nation
and what his arrangements
with the paper are. "The Post
had a very noble past and The
Nation has a very exciting
future," was his comment on
the move.
Kestin, from New York, says
what makes his paper unique
is that it has no editorial
policy and no editorials. Space
is reserved for guest opinion
pieces, but "this paper does
not have a political mind," he-
says. .
The lack of editorial policy
— unheard of in Israeli jour-
nalism — led one skeptical
Hebrew paper to quip that on-
ly the telephone book has no
editorial policy.
Kestin defends his decision
and answers critics who ad-
vised him that The Nation
should be a right-wing alter-
native to the Jerusalem Post.
"I reject that," he says. "If
people want a paper to fur-
ther split the Jews, they
should do it themselves.
Every time we've had a state,
we've destroyed it from with-
in."
Kestin believes that The
Nation's lack of editorial
policy will give its news cover-
age greater credibility.
While the number of
Israel's English-speakers is
small — about eight percent
of the population — and a
competitor of the Jerusalem
Post is unlikely to tap a vein
of undiscovered readers,
Kestin says there is room-for.
both papers and profitability.
