I SYNAGOGUES

Whereas the Jewish National Fund's historic achievements in
developing the land of Israel include the planting of over 185
million trees throughout the Jewish state, and
Whereas Israel's enemies have embarked upon a new form of
terrorism, arson, responsible for the 1,100 fires that swept through
Israel's forests in the summer of 1988, at a cost of over $40 Million,
and
Whereas 1.15 million trees, covering nearly 40,000 acres,
planted by the Jewish people through JNF have succumed to the
flames of destruction, and
Whereas in response, JNF initiated a national Fire Emergen-
cy Campaign, dedicated to the reforestation of the devastated areas
and the purchase of the latest fire-fighting equipment, and
Whereas in a nationwide show of support for Eretz Israel and
the life-sustaining work of JNF, those who love the Jewish state
have asserted their determination to redeem and beautify the land
our enemies are trying to destroy.
We hereby proclaim Shabbat Shira Tu B'Shevat 5749, cor-
responding to January 21, 1989, as Shabbat Ha'aretz, and we call
upon all Jewish organizations, synagogues and schools to participate
with us in ge'ulat ha'aretz-redemption of the land.
