Private Banquet Rooms
Complete Carry-Out On All Occasions
turnabout seems to
have happened at
Ram's Horn of
Southfield on 12 Mile east of
Northwestern . . . now solely
owned by Tom Pantoleon and
managed by son John
Pantoleon.
Looks to be more of a
cohesive atmosphere with
employees knowing what
they are doing in a much bet-
ter trained manner.
Among the big reasons is
an excellent mother-and-
daughter team that waits on
tables from morning to late
afternoon . . . and sometimes
on double-shift . . . as though
they owned the place and
want to give every inch of ser-
vice possible.
Dianne Stewart has been
with the Ram's Horn opera-
tion 19 years . . . and a year
at the 12 Mile and Nor-
thwestern site . . . Daughter
Tammy used to peel potatoes
for mom when she was
around 8-years-old . . . and
formerly waited on tables at
Ram's Horn of Troy when 15
years of age . . . She'll be 24
June 2.
Both Dianne and Tammy
are highly efficient, extreme-
ly cordial and very customer-
pleasing oriented . . . They
are distinct employee assets
you don't find at too many
eating spots these days.
VALENTINE'S DAY isn't
far away . . . and Deli Unique
on Orchard Lake Road in
West Bloomfield Plaza could
also be a romance center if
local gent discovers a certain
dark-haired gal with whom
he recently locked eyes .. .
She was sitting in a back
booth with another lassie
10 a.m. Dec. 11 .. .
Before Lou Golden could ar-
range an introduction for his
friend, the two ladies had left
. . . Would be a Valentine
"mitzvah" if the guy and gal
could meet each other again
. . . Lou does everything else
for people . . . let's make him
the go-between . . . By the
way, those Deli Unique
Winter Specials are at both
the West Bloomfield and Oak
Park restaurants.
ONE OF THE largest
falsities in restaurant cook-
ing is that foods of India are
too spicy and hot . . . Like
many others, Szechuan, Ca-
jun, Mexican, etc., it can be
had however the diner desires
. . . mild, medium or hot.
Armando-Shalimar opened
after Labor Day in September
and already has made friends
with people discovering this
major factor . . . The location
is ideal . . . on Orchard Lake.
Road between 12 Mile and 13
Mile . . . former Starboard
Tack, Darlin' Lilly, Eastman's
Landing and Casa Armando
. . . seating about 150 in-
cluding its lounge area.
Armando-Shalimar is the
only restaurant hereabouts
serving Indian food that has
clay ovens in the dining room
where customers can see the
authentic Tandoor drums
with their charcoal burning
ovens.
The quaint combination of
Indian and Mexican foods
will no doubt soon lead to a
combo of both cuisines.
Our latest visit there was
tasty and pleasant . . .
chicken tikka has tender
boneless chicken pieces
marinated overnight in
yogurt, garlic, ginger and
lemon juice . . . My side dish
of palak paneer is also serv-
ed as a vegetable entree .. .
homemade cheese cubes and
spinach cooked in fresh herbs
and spices . . . Armando
Shalimar's mango ice cream
is in a class its very own .. .
Whatever Chef Jeet Reen
does in making this, it's very
special . . . and much reason
for the high popularity being
enjoyed . . . He's also noted for
his rice pudding which takes
Jeet four to five hours in the
making.
All breads are made on the
premises . six different
types . . . We had the Naan,
which is much like pita and
made with whole wheat .. .
the pranta bread has no eggs,
just whole wheat, flour and
water.
Foods from India are noted
for their vegetarian dishes .. .
and health aspects . . . The
many low-calorie items are
also quite popular.
Mexican and Indian food -
might be a strange combina-
tion . . . but indications show
that it may be a successful
one . . . since people who
go to Armando-Shalimar can
choose whichever side of the
coin they wish.
RESTORANTE DI MO-
DESTA has reopened quietly
in Marketplace on Nor-
thwestern between 12 and 13
Mile . . . but you wouldn't
think it was so quietly done
by all the customers who pack
the place each night . . . Still
seats 80 yet looks larger
because of the way bar and
holding area are now situated
. . . plus folks coming straight
in . . . Valet parking is
