dy." Mother: "In six inch
heels?"
During the scene at the
father's gravesite, she pulls
out all the stops and throws
all the usual lines at her son,
who has had the audacity to
bury his lover in one of the
family plots. When Beckoff
begins to recite Kadish it
pushes Bancroft over the edge
and we witness the kind of
yelling match that we have
come to expect from Jewish
mothers and their sons — gay
or straight.
The final irony is that
Beckoff and his mother are
two sides of the same coin.
"rhe ultimate insult would be
Beckoff to ignore his
mother. But he cares too
much for her not to fight
back. In the end she turns the
tables on Beckoff by confron-
ting him with his own trans-
gression — not letting her
more into his life — and they
call a truce that bodes well for
the future.
Fierstein has said of his
play that it is the ". . . story
of a man trying to find his
place in the world, a world
that isn't necessarily built for
him, and he continues
because he is brave of spirit
and true ofheart. He builds a
world within the world for
himself to exist."
Paul Bogart, the director,
has done an excellent job of
translating this vision to the
screen so that it percolates
with all the open visual ex-
citement of a film while re-
taining the ensemble feel of
theater with its attendant
emphasis on language.
Closeups dominate the film,
as do dark, rich colors
enhanced by the
cinematography of Mikael
Salomon.
The play has been given
some "breathing room" by
employing various locations
throughout New York, in-
cluding street scenes and a
rustic country retreat. The
work also swings with
enough good music to fill up
an album — Ella Fitzgerald,
James Brown, Billie Holiday,
and some wonderful cabaret
songs by Fierstein.
But, the heart of this film
(and of the original play) re-
mains Fierstein himself, who
appears in almost every
frame. Not many actors could
maintain our interest or sym-
pathy through so much foot-
age. But Fierstein brings an
intense energy to this role
that has the audience con-
stantly rooting for him as he
massages his improbably
raspy, gravelly voice through
one torch song after another
on his way to making a fami-
ly and finding some love
tinged with respect.
