Less than 10 steps across
the hall, the unsealed "an-
nex" is bustling with activi-
ty. Standing expectantly at
each of the five stations is a
neonatologist and a
respiratory therapist, to be
joined by a neonatal nurse
bearing the newborn from the
delivery room. Each station
and each piece of aparatus, is
labeled "Baby A," "Baby B,"
"Baby C," "Baby D," and
"Baby E."
Mary Jo Wilson is wheeled
into position in the delivery
room, husband Bill seated at
her side. Pivoting her to the
right, Dr. Tuwill runs his
fingers over her back, freshly
painted with a disinfectant,
seeking an opening between
vertbrae. A needle is inserted
and a numbing agent
introduced.
The abdomen is prepared
with a disinfectant while

Tuwill's first injection, Dr.
