The most serious stumbling block is a will- ingness to sit down together in good faith with Jewish uni- ty as the top priority. It is our rabbis who know best that the explanation given for the destruction of the Second Temple, centuries ago, was seen as cheenam, or causeless hatred between Jews. American Jews will be watching in the weeks ahead to see if our rabbinic leader- ship can rise above the fac- tionalism and hatred that have, for too long, divided us, and seek a common solution to a serious problem that will not go away. LETTERS 1 Continued from Page 6 PLUS— Gad tional Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership. "The issues are complex, but not beyond resolution," Rab- bi Bulka asserted in a state- ment. "There is no room for denominatinal triumphalism -- individual and institu- tional egos must be removed from the fray. "If we act properly and responsibily . . . we will have transmuted a potential cataclysm into a triumph for all Jews. Instead of focusing on the Law of Return, we must work together for a Return of Law, a law that brings us all together. It is doubtful that such boycotts will convince the "good Germans" that the pro- fits from chemical weapons are not worth it. However, at least we will feel better that we have not spit on the souls of the Jews murdered by the Nazis or, God forbid, any Jews killed in the future by Ger- man designed chemical weapons. Bat-Sheva Nivy Lerner Royal Oak Intermarriage And The Bible In his article in your Dec. 23 issue, Rabbi Richard Hertz states that since the biblical character Joseph marries an Egyptian woman "Joseph's sons would be disenfranchis- ed if they lived today and tried to make aliyah. Their mother was not Jewish. Yet Joseph is revered in Jewish circles . ." The question about Joseph loses its validity when view- ed in proper historical perspective. Joseph's father the patriarch Jacob, had 12 sons (Joseph included) and one daughter. Could these 12 sons be expected to find "Jewish' mates if they were the only "Jewish prototypes" in existence at the time? It could likewise be argued that Moses married Tzip- porah, a Midianite woman (Exodus 2:21). But such an argument would also fail to take into account that no such prohibition of intermar- riage existed until the giving of the Torah to our people. The Torah and its laws were not given until after the Jewish nation left Egypt and received it at Mount Sinai. Once the Torah is received, the Bible is replete in its feel- ings on intermarriage ... . Intermarriage has been a problem for our people throughout our history. However, after the receiving of the Torah and its com- mandments, the Bible's at- titude towards intermarriage is clear and unwaivering. Dr. Bruce Sherizen Southfield Journalistic War Against Orthodox The ongoing journalistic pogrom against religious Jewry reached a new nadir of degradation with the scur- rilous remarks by Mark Liebhaber — presented to us courtesy of Philip Slomovitz in his "Purely Commentary" column (Jan. 6). The words, ". . . never serv- ed in Israel's army" desecrates the memory of Chabad soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces who fell in Israel's wars. The Lubavit- chers serve in Israel's army; they are to be found in the elite front-line combat units such as the Golani Brigade, in tank battalions, the para- troopers, the infantry, the navy, and the air force. Their collective service record is virtuous and star- studded, as is true for the overwhelming majority of religious Jews in Israel, con- trary to the stereotype con- jured up in the press during the anti-Orthodox jihad of the past several months. Even this baseless pro- paganda pales by comparison to the malicious statement about the Lubavitcher Rebbe interfering in the affairs of Continued on Page 12 N (
