have your favorite cocktail on
the porch overlooking the
lake and you'll forget you're
in Michigan.
"You don't find Maine
lobster in too many dining
spots in and around Detroit.
But the Gandy Dancer in
Ann Arbor is an exception. •
The refurbished Michigan
Central Railroad Depot offers
a down east feast of lobster,
Dungeness crab, mussels, red-
skins and corn on the cob plus
conviviality with trains roar-
ing by right outside the win-
dow. The food makes this
worth the whistle stop.
"Ginopolis' on Middlebelt
and 12 Mile in Farmington
Hills has changed its image
from a singles hospot to a
family restaurant. The food is
exceptionally good and we
recommend rainbow trout
chargrilled to perfection.
"The Brass Point on Or-
chard Lake Road and 10 Mile
in Farmington Hills offers
some of the best broasted
chicken in these parts . . . It's
worth the wait in line for a
real taste treat.
"Meriwethers on Telegraph
and 10 Mile serves better
than average seafood in a
more formal atmosphere than
some of the Charley's opera-
tions. The teacup bread and
many of the pasta dishes are
a little different and the fish
is top drawer.
"Lowry's on Hiller Road in
West Bloomfield is an in-
timate and attractive little
dining spot with a handsome
atrium dining room in the
lower level. The homemade
pasta with pesto could put
some Italian restaurants to
shame. Among the best bets
at Lowry's are seafood Well-
ington and medallions of beef
tenderloin.
"Detroit is touted as one of
the world's great restaurant
capitals because of the
cosmopolitan stew of people
who settle here. Cafes, bistros,
trattorias, rib joints and
diners dot city streets and
neighborhoods. The exodus to
the suburbs created the push
to accommodate the diners
who live on the outskirts of
motown. But when Detroit
thinks of fish, it still thinks of
Joe Muer's, the king of the
high seas.
"Carl's Chop House on
Grand River remains a gigan-
tic landmark which has been
in business since the '30s and
still serves two-inch-thick
steer porterhouse and
tankfulls of pick-your-own
lobster.
