Source: A-12 FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1989 1988 Scarborough-Jewish News Study T he 1989 Ford Thunder- bird was named the Motor Trend maga- zine's Car of the Year recent- ly at a press luncheon at the North American Interna- tional Auto Show at Cobo Hall. Ford Motor Co. has driven away with this award three times in the last four years. The Thunderbird won in 1987 and the Taurus in 1986. For the last 20 years Motor Trend magazine has an- nounced the winner in Los Angeles. According to Robert E. Brown, senior vice presi- dent for corporate develop- ment, Petersen Publishing Co., publisher of Motor Trend magazine, "This year we thought it would be ap- propriate to salute Detroit as the automobile capital of the world and the Detroit Auto Dealers Association for stag- ing the first truly interna- tional auto show ever held in Detroit." The supercharged Thunder- bird has a 215 horsepower, 3.8 liter V-6 engine with a new 1989 aerodynamic styling. "The new aerodynamic look and exceptional ride and handling characteristics set it apart from the crowd," said Thomas J. Wagner, Ford vice president and Ford division general manager. The Thunderbird beat out contenders from Chrysler in- cluding the Dodge Spirit and Plymouth Acclaim and Ford's own Mercury Cougar. The candidates are limited to cars designed and built in the United States. Cars are judg- ed on performance character- istics such as acceleration, braking and handling. Every car is driven over a com- prehensive course of public roads. All the tests are tabulated and certified by the accountant group Arthur Young and Co. Motor Trend magazine will announce the winner in their February issue, and in April they will announce the winner of the Import Car of the Year. "We at Motor Trend feel that the domestic industry has improved greatly in re- cent years in design, technology and quality of the cars it produces," Brown said. Peugeot Sets Record The Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 rally car, which set an all- time record at the Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb in Colorado Springs this summer, will be on display at the North American International Auto Show. Visitors to the Peugeot display can relive the Pikes Peak victory through a live multi-media show which features breathtaking film footage of the 405 Turbo 16 scaling the snow-covered, 14,110-foot mountain. The 520-horsepower double- overhead-cam engine in the 405 Turbo 16 rally car served as a model for the 16-valve powerplant in the new Peugeot 405 Mi 16, which also will be on display. The Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb, established in 1916, is America's second oldest motorsports challenge after the Indy 500, won by a 16-valve . Peugeot in 1913, 1916 and 1919. The Peugeot 405 Turbo 16 rally car has enjoyed victories worldwide,
