he new 1989 Detroit
auto show even has a
new name — The
North American Interna-
tional Auto Show. The event
from January 7-15 at the
newly expanded Cobo Hall
promises to make interna-
tional news with the laun-
ching of future cars and con-
cept vehicles by every major
automaker in the world.
The Detroit Auto Dealers
Association is hosting the
global event to rival shows in
Frankfurt, Geneva, Paris,
Tokyo and the neighboring
Chicago Auto Show. Major
automakers and local auto
dealers are joining forces to
make this a reality.
"We welcome international
competition in Michigan. It
brings out the best in us. So
it is fitting that the Detroit
Auto Dealers Association has
gone international with its
traditional show and has
transformed it into the North
American International Auto
Show," said Governor James
Blanchard.
One of the major additions
is the newly expanded Cobo
Hall offering more display
space for more cars. The $225
million expansion will enable
the show to increase the
display space by 60 percent.
Some of Cobo Hall's new at-
tributes include 84 meeting
rooms and a 27,000 square
foot ballroom. In 1990,
100,000 square feet will be
added promising to continue
the precedent of this premier
event.
Two surefire attractions are

the world debut of the
Japanese luxury car lines —
Toyota's Lexus and Nissan's
Infiniti — aimed directly to
compete with American and
German luxury cars. Both
cars will debut at the auto
show but will not officially be
on sale until September,
1989.
The four-door Lexus LS 400
is the luxury car by Toyota.
"The 4.0 liter, four-cam,
32 valve aluminum V-8
engine is the first to be of-
fered by a Japanese manufac-
turer," states press releases.

elude: a standard, automatic
transmission that talks to the
engine's computer; a traction
control system to reduce
wheelspin; sound dampening
materials to minimize noise
levels; a tilt steering wheel
that automatically swings up
when the ignition key is
removed and returns to its
previous position when the
key is removed and returns to
its previous position when the
key is reinserted.
Chevrolet promises to make
news with the debut of six
new vehicles. The six include
three members of the Lumina
line, the Corvette ZR-1, a Geo-
Prizm and a Geo Storm. Also
