was $1,400. It was a white
1960 Comet with red interior.
The salesman said it was in
excellent condition because it
was owned by a little old lady.
At age 16, I paid for the car
with money from my after-
school job at Northland where
I was a bookkeeper and gift
wrapper. My dad and I work-
ed a joint venture agreement,
which said that my did would
pay for the insurance and I
would pay for the gas and
repairs.
I drove the car four fun-
filled years. I had a mean-
ingful relationship with that
car. I had to reason with it in
the morning to get it started
and wait patiently after it
threw a temper tantrum and
overheated. I loved that car;
I treated it like a child.
When it finally died, I was
20 years old and married.
Spencer and I pushed it
across the street to a gas sta-
tion and junked it for $50
dollars. I've had a number of
cars since, but none as special
or meaningful as that joint-
venture with my father on my
first car.

My first car was a 1939
Mercury Roadster with a
rumble seat. My husband and
I would go for Sunday rides to
Belle Isle. I specifically
remember Sunday, December
7, 1941, when we were at the
hockey game at Olympia
Stadium and first heard
about the Pearl Harbor bom-
bing. We then drove'for a ride
along Belle Isle. When we
stopped the car and got out,
there were a number of other
cars. We were all silent. From
then on, I hated to go for Sun-
day rides on Belle Isle.

Dodge that we only used on
the weekends. During a
Detroit bus strike, in order to
get to work, I had to drive the
car one Tuesday morning. Be-
ing a novice driver, I had dif-
ficulty shifting, ran through a
red light, and scraped the leg
of a traffic cop, knocking him
down. When I got to my
destination I was relieved.
Later on my way home, I was
