Jews can be masochists
should make the rounds of
these dinners, where the
highlight is watching wealthy
donors during the cocktail
hour in search of waitresses
bearing knishes.
I know full well that the
purpose of these affairs is to
raise funds, and that the con-
ventional wisdom is that
elaborate dinners will attract

more participants. But hav-
ing attended these affairs pro-
fessionally for almost two
decades, I suggest that
organizations might save a
good deal of money and foster
good will by foregoing the an-
nual dinner routine. Better
yet, one local rabbi, a veteran
of countless dinner functions
on the organizational net-
work, suggested that every
Jewish group hold its affair
the same night, same place,
same basic crowd. Each
group could unfurl its banner
for a half hour, and at the end
of the marathon evening,
everyone could go home hap-
py, free for another year.
But the Jewish organiza-
tions would sooner honor
Waldheim than give up their
routines. And so, I await the
next big event, with memor-
ies of Milton Berle discussing
erections in front of the cream
of the crop of the American
Jewish community, in search
of the perfect metaphor. 0
