Jewish Children Aid Armenians Los Angeles — A group of 11-year-old synagogue students visited a class at an Armenian church last week to offer their friendship and support — and a check for $3,182 to aid the victims of the devastating earthquake in Soviet Armenia. Sixth-graders from Valley Beth Shalom Day School in the Los Angeles suburb of En- cino had raised the money in a classroom drive. They presented the donation to sixth-graders at the nearby Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armenian School. "We were all upset about what happened in the earth- quake," student Jason Adelman of the synagogue class explained. "We told the little kids what happened and they wanted to give, too." The Armenian youngsters ex- pressed their thanks by sing- ing a song of their homeland. Father Muron Aznikian, dean of the school, noted that the children's unexpected gift was symbolic of the diffi- culties Jews and Armenians have shared in their struggles for a homeland. "The Jews were among the first to come share in our tragedy," Aznikian said. "But they have suffered as we. They know our situation in this desperate time." N U.S. Negative On Settlements Washington (JTA) — The State Department last week reiterated its longstanding position that the establish- ment of additional Israeli set- tlements in the administered territories is "not helpful" in advancing Middle East peace prospects. Department spokeswoman Phyllis Oakley would not comment directly on a Likud- Labor compromise to build eight new settlements in the ( coming year. But she said the United States considers the building of new settlements as "not helpful in moving toward the comprehensive peace settlement that we all desire."
