, f,OR Ev io 1 // THE FRANKLIN JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAM All Ages / All Levels / Non-Members Welcome WINTER CLASSES BE GIN Jan. 6 • Ages 3-18 • Limited Space • Beginners To National Level Players While the physical nature of the college game surprised Duberman, it did not scare him. "I love the physical game. I'm not the fastest skater in the world but I can play the physical game, I think, with anybody. I like it; it keeps me going." Duberman scored one goal and added one assist while playing in 21 of North Dakota's first 23 regular- season games. Gasparini believes that Duberman will soon start to score goals. "He's got very good hands. He's just got to improve on his speed and he's got to get a lit- tle more positive with the puck, overall. A lot of it's mental right now and that "I think finally I've found a home," he says. "I had two great years in Detroit." goes with the youth. In time, he'll get that part of it. We're not worried about him not developing because we know he's going to develop into a pretty good player." Duberman chose North Dakota because he was im- pressed with Gasparini and the school's athletic and academic facilities. He will likely major in business. After leaving his home in suburban Chicago to play a year of youth hockey in New Jersey and two more seasons in Detroit, Duberman looks forward to settling in Grand Forks for four years. - "I think finally I've found a home," he says. "I had two great years in Detroit and a great year in New Jersey. I miss my friends a lot , in Detroit; I miss the scho ol (Oak Park High)." Duberman scored his first goal as a collegian at home on Nov. 4 against Western Col- legiate Hockey Association rival University of Minnesota-Duluth. "The game was on TV that night," recalls Duberman, "and a buddy of mine taped the game. I must've gone home and watched it a million times. It's good for a couple days but you've got to put that aside and move on." Duberman scored twice in an exhibition game against the visiting Moscow Dynamo team on Dec. 18. Dynamo, which took a 7-5 win, plays in the Soviet Elite League, the USSR's version of the Na- tional Hockey League. "They're the best team I've ever seen play the game," says Duberman. "I didn't know the game could be played like that. It's just an honor to play against them. Scoring two goals made it that much bet- ter." North Dakota placed second in last week's Great Lakes In- vitational Tournament at Joe Louis Arena, losing a double- overtime final to the Univer- sity of Michigan, 6-5. Although Duberman played sparingly during regulation time, Gasparini showed con- fidence in Duberman by giv- ing him a regular shift in overtime. Perhaps these recent perfor- mances are a forerunner of things to come for Duberman, although his only goals are for a strong second half for North Dakota, which was 12-11 after the GLI, and strong performances in the WCHA and NCAA playoffs.
