Jury Selected
In JDL Trial

Los Angeles (JTA) — A jury
was selected this week in the
trial of an American-Israeli
couple and a Los Angeles real
estate broker who stand ac-
cused of mailing a disguised
bomb device to a local com-
puter firm eight years ago
that killed a secretary at the
firm.
The three defendants are
all former members of the
Jewish Defense League.
Defendant Robert Steven
Manning, 36, is a resident of
the West Bank settlement of
Kiryat Arba who is still in
Israel.
According to U.S. govern-
ment sources, Manning is
closely linked to Rabbi Meir
Kahane and his anti-Arab
Kach Party. He is a prime
suspect in the 1985 bomb
slayings of Alex Odeh, an
Arab-American activist, in
Santa Ana, Calif., and
Tscherim Soobzokov, an alleg-
ed Nazi war criminal, in Pat-
terson, N.J.
Efforts by the U.S. Justice
Department to have Israel ex-
tradite Manning have so far
been unsuccessful.
Rochelle Ida Manning, 48,
is Robert Manning's wife. She
was arrested in June at the
Los Angeles international
airport as she and her two
children arrived by plane
from Tel Aviv. Both Mannings
hold dual American and
Israeli citizenship.
William Ross is a 51-year-
old real estate broker who
allegedly was engaged in a
bitter real estate dispute in
1980 with the owner of the
computer fire to whom the
mail bomb was addressed. On
arrival, the package was
opened by secretary Patricia
Wilkerson, a 35-year-old
mother of two, who was kill-
ed instantly.

Egypt Detains
Fishermen

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel is
trying to obtain the release of
four fisherman from Eilat de-
tained by Egypt for violating
its territorial waters on the
Red Sea. Israeli military
sources said that according to
their investigation, the Egyp-
tian authorities in Nueiba
were justified in seizing the
men and their boat.
Apparently, the men were
sailing within 50 yards of the
Egyptian shore, in violation
of an Israeli-Egyptian agree-
ment forbidding vessels from
coming within 300 yards of
shore. The fishermen were
fined $300, but are unable to
pay.
