rogated to themselves the
right to define who is a Jew
by declaring contrary to 2,000
years of previous Jewish prac-
tice that children born of
Jewish fathers and gentile
mothers are Jews.
These Reform rabbis (The
Central Conference of
American Rabbis) do not
believe in the authority of
Halachah — Jewish religious
law as defined by the Torah
and Talmud — and were
therefore under no compul-
sion to issue their
redefinition.
Their new broader defini-
tion is not a definition for
themselves alone since they
seek to have people so-defined
considered as Jews, for exam-
ple, by the State of Israel. In
other words, they seek to
place their judgement above
that of the other major bran-
ches of Judaism and outside
millenia of precedent. And,
these Reform leaders were
aware that the other bran-
ches would not (the Orthodox
would say could not) accept
this definition.
As a member of a Reform
temple, I am ashamed by the
action of these leaders of my
faith. Their arrogant action
has created a whole category
of people whose Jewishness
will be recognized by one
branch of Judaism and not by
the others and, in this way,
furher undermine the unity
of the Jewish people — Klal
Yisrael .. .
With so many problems and
so few friends, one would
think that the Jewish people
would have the sense to strive
for unity rather than dissen-
sion and try to work out dif-
ferences rather than strain to
create rancor from harmony.
That is why I find the actions
> of both Orthodox and Reform
leaders so hard to
understand.
