Neil Satovsky, right, studies the laws of Passover with Rabbi Menachem
Greenfield.

unaffiliated, Conservative,
Reform and Orthodox.
Chanoch Bresler of
Brooklyn, N.Y., a 21-year-old
Talmud student, was at-
tracted to the Oak Park in-
stitution because of Rabbi
Bakst. "I was in a yeshivah in
New York which had younger
rabbis who had U.S. training.
I wanted to learn with rabbis
with European roots." (Rabbi
Bakst studied at the famous
Mirrer Yeshivah in Poland
and is recognized world-wide
for his Torah scholarship.) In
addition, Bresler's father had
studied under Bakst.
"He is a dynamic person —
nobody gives sermons like he
does," said Cleveland native
Chaim Cohen. Cohen, mar-
ried and the father of two, is
a part-time student at the
Yeshiva Gedolah. He studies
at the yeshivah because "my
Jewishness is first and my
culture is first!' but pursues
the programming job "to sup-
port my family!'
Detroiter
Herschel
Blumenfeld, 21, a Talmud
student, said he hopes to
follow in the footsteps of Rab-
bi Bakst — to be a dean of a
school or a "communal rabbi!'
It is not unusual that
students are drawn to the
yeshivah because of the
reputation of Rabbi Bakst.
"The Yeshivah Gedolah is
central to Orthodox
Judaism," Rabbi Krohner
said. "Some out-of-town
families came here and
bought homes based on the
strength of the yeshivah and
to be associated with Rabbi
Bakst!'
Fifteen-year-old Avraham
Krieger likes the fact that the
yeshivah is in his hometown.
"What the school gives I
usually have to go out of town
for, " he said. "I heard it has
a good English staff and
Hebrew staff and it's in my
own town." Krieger also was
influenced by friends who had
good experiences at the
school.

Avraham Applebaum
echoed Krieger. He can study
at an institution that's "equal
in stature and environment
as any top rated yeshivah"
while staying in Detroit and
being close to his family.
Undecided about his career
goals, the Wayne State
University liberal arts
graduate spends his time pur-
suing full-time studies at
Yeshiva Gedolah. "It's impor-
tant for me to have a solid day
of learning, " he said.

Applebaum is a graduate of
the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah,
which Krohner said is a
"natural feeder school for
Yeshiva Gedolah." About 75
percent of the student body is
comprised of Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah graduates. It is also
natural that the school be in
what today is considered the
center of Detroit's Orthodox
enclave in the 10 Mile-
Greenfield area.

"Our location is an invest-
ment in the community,"
Krohner explained. The
school, located at 24600
Greenfield, is near kosher
specialty shops such as
Zeman's New York Kosher
Bakery, Lakewood Specialty
Shop, Borenstein's book store,
and to Orthodox synagogues
and Jewish Welfare
Federation-funded agencies,
such as the Prentis Jewish
Federation Apartments and
the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Branch of the Jewish Com-
munity Center. Satovsky said
the success of the school is im-
portant to the stability of the
neighborhood.

The school also has a
women's division, the Yigdal
Women's Organization. With
a membership of about 400,
the women's group conducts
bazaars and other fund-
raising activities to help pay
for capital improvements,
equipment for the science lab
and books for the Judaic
library.
