Walking:
Safe Exercise

Mature Americans looking
for effective, safe exercise can
find it right under their noses
— at their feet! Walking is one
of the few forms of exercise in
which the rate of participa-
tion does not decline in the
middle to later years.
More than 2,000 years ago,
Hippocrates considered walk-
ing the best medicine. rIbday,
experts agree that a walking
program helps promote good
health and prevent age-
related disease. Physicians
consider it therapeutic for
people recovering from heart
attacks.
Walking exercises the
whole body, worlang almost
every muscle for overall con-
ditioning. Walking can burn
as many calories as jogging
without the risk of injury, and
helps lower high blood
pressure, lubricate joints and
reduce arthritis pain.
For some who suffer from
everyday aches and pains, the
hardest part is the first step.
Hal Higdon, consultant to the
Icy Hot Foot Steps to Fitness
Program and author of
Fitness After Forty, recom-
mends following his three-
point plan to fitness,
developed with the makers of
Icy Hot dual-action pain-
relieving rub.
"First, get set with the
right attire. Wear comfortable
clothes and sturdy, but com-
fortable shoes," says Higdon.
"Second, get psyched by hav-
ing a goal, whether you're los-
ing a few pounds or just walk-
ing to the store. Finally, warm
up with self-massage and
stretching — before and after
your exercise regimen."
