The history of genealogy

Section (NCJW) on Jan. 24 at
the NCJW office, 30233

Phonogift
Begins Jan. 15
Jewish Welfare Federation
Women's Division volunteers
will call on 4,500 Detroit area
women during Phonogift on
Jan. 15, 16, 26 and 29, asking
them to make their pledges to
the 1989 Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Phonogift is the annual
Women's Division telethon
that helps to mobilize the
community-wide phase of the
Campaign. More than 300
volunteers will make calls
from the United Hebrew
Schools in Southfield, asking
local women to support the
Campaign's human service
agencies here at home and
overseas.
In addition to the regular
pre-telethon briefing, repre-
sentatives from some Federa-
tion's member agencies —
such as Jewish Family Ser-
vice and Jewish Federation
Apartments — will be at UHS
to talk with workers about
local needs.
Heading Phonogift are Rus-
ty Rosman, chairman;
Marian Kantor, associate
chairman; Barbara Cook, ad-
viser; Gilda Jacobs and Bar-
bara Safran, co-chairmen,
Business and Professional
Division Phonogift Cam-
paign; Doris August and
Joyce Sherman, Campaign
education; Sharon Taylor,
special handling; and Kim
Dickstein and Lois Falk,
clerical.
Diane Klein is Women's
Division Campaign chair-
man, and Sharon Hart is divi-
sion president.

Israel To Open
Islam Seminary
Jerusalem — Israeli educa-
tion authorities plan to
establish the first seminary
for the study of Islam in
Israel.
Until now, Israeli Arabs
wishing to study Islam travel-
ed abroad or studied at an in-
stitution in the West Bank.
The education officials are
getting advice on the new
seminary from the Al-Azhar
University in Cairo.
