which would agree to this
arrangement.
The failure to establish
such a procedure, which
would heal so much of the
present tensions aroused by
the "Who Is A Jew" con-
troversy, has been the refusal
of the extreme Orthodox rab-
binic leadership to recognize
all conversions which accept
this procedure.
Ms. Huffstutter's account of
her experience with her rab-
bi smears all Conservative
rabbis with a supposed failure
of a particular rabbi who, in
her view, failed to live up to
the highest standards of his
profession.
Because one Orthodox rab-
bi in Brooklyn gave an "ins-
tant" conversion to Aulcie
Perry (to enable him to play
professional basketball in
Israel) or because "instant"
conversion certificates can be
purchased from some dis-
reputable Orthodox rabbis in
Meah Shearim, should we
generalize and say that all
Orthodox conversions are to
be questioned?
It is high time that the
responsible leadership in the
Orthodox community display
the public courage of their
private convictions and join
with their colleagues in the
Conservative and Reform
movements in a spirit of
Ahavat Yisrael (Love of the
Jewish People) to resolve this
question and once and for all
remove it from the poisonous
and divisive role it has played
in our community.

Keeping Vigilant
Against TORCH

I LETTERS I
The TORCH campaign to
"put Christmas back in the
school" is part of a renewed
effort to chip away at church-
state separation. Many of us
in the Bloomfield Hills school
district turned out in large
numbers to show our support
for the school board's current
policy of keeping all religious
instruction out of the schools.
Before the community tur-
nout and the media attention,
TORCH advocates were more
true to form, calling for a
"God-centered curriculum"
and, in the words of TORCH
macher Toby Jones, claiming
that "Christmas is the most
important holiday in America
and the world." The rudeness
and lack of manners of cer-
tain TORCH leaders were a
shock to many of us. In the
face of strong community con-
cern, TORCH moderated its
position slightly.
The change was cosmetic
only. These people are intent
on getting religion in the
public schools. They have a
"new" legal argument based
on the concept of Christmas
as a "national holiday."
Bloomfield Hills will
prevail over this, although
we'll have a fight over this for
a few years. However, TORCH
will be popping up in other
districts, looking for a sym-
pathetic or frighened school
board.
I suggest that we get active
in our school districts, and at
the first sign of a TORCH
move, organize for a large
community turnout. The best
way to counter this new fever,
fueled by fundamentalists, is
to show unified community-
wide strength.

Jewish State
Or Arab State?
In responding to the current
PLO "peace" offensive, it is
wrong to question Arafat's in-
tentions. He can be trusted to
further "Palestinian" claims
against Jewish rights to a
Jewish state.
The real issue has never
changed. It is "Whose Land is
it Really?" The Arabs and the
media always speak of "oc-
cupied territories," indoc-
trinating the unwary that the
land is Arab and the Jewish
presence in Judea-Samaria
and Gaza is illegal. This
claim is based on the Arab
belief that all of their
"Palestine," not just the "ter-
ritories," is occupied by the
hated, infidel Jews. Tel Aviv
and Jerusalem are the sym-
bols of Jewish expansionism.
Thus, giving a "piece for
peace" can be seen for the
fraud it is.
Possession of homeland is
not negotiable as any Arab,
European, and American will
tell us. In the negotiations
urged between Zionist and
Palestinian, there is only one
item on the agenda — how
much of the Jewish homeland
the Arabs will let us keep —
for now.
As politics abhors am-
biguous sovereignty, so Jews
must make up their minds. If
Judea-Samaria and Gaza,
like the Negev and Galilee,
are part of our rightful
heritage, then they must be
taken without apology or
compromise. If Arab land,
then the territories must be
returned to the Arabs, PLO
notwithstanding, for them to
do with it whatever they
wish. Security is no justifica-
tion for occupation.
The remedy for alleged "oc-
cupation" is liberation with a
declaration of ownership and
sovereignty. That will end the
