They are also married to a mob of movies and plays over the years, performing together in such dramas as The Diary of Anne Frank and Waltz of the Toreadors and films such as The Tiger Makes Out and How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life. But now we are talking about Cafe Crown, in which Wallach and Jackson portray the Coles, a couple modeled after the Yiddish royals themselves — the estimable Adler family. "My parents used to take me to the Cafe Royal," says Wallach. "That's where I saw Maurice Schwartz, Molly Picon, all the great actors. They'd sit, eat, hold court. Their fans would buzz around them. You know, it was real- ly royalty." But even royalty was occa- sionally thrown for a loss. "Oh, the Yiddish theater au- diences were partisan, no doubt about it," and Wallach chuckles at the memory. "They used to take sides, my actor against your actor, pit- ching one against the other." Wallach's father never was one for such arguments. To him, recalls Wallach, "any ac- ting was good as long as the actor was Jewish. You know, it was one of the great sur- prises in my father's life to discover that George M. Cohan wasn't a Jew." If Yiddish theater was a party, Cafe Royal was where the favors were passed out. But Jackson, who is not Jewish, never partied with the others. "I had never seen a Yiddish play," she admits. Not that she hadn't seen a Yiddish actor. Indeed, she heard so many anecdotes from friends who had played the Yiddish stage that she feels everyone's mishpochah. But then, Jackson has only to turn to her husband for a taste of the honey that is his recollections. "From what Eli tells me, it was larger than life," she says. While not as lively as it once was, Yiddish theater is far from dead, says the ac- tress. "You just couldn't kill it off." Who'd want to try? Not Goz, that's for sure. The amiable actor, who played Tevye in Broadway's Fiddler on the Roof longer than any other actor, feels right in his role as playwright Toplitz. Goz remembers "growing up with a rich, hearty language and a true feeling for the works of Sholom Aleichem. My dad used to take me to Yiddish plays, and what I didn't understand he'd explain to me.
