SOCIETY'
Special to The Jewish News
I
t was a Yiddish Sardi's
for the tzedakah set, with
actors sliding in and out
of seats set up for a bite of cor-
ned beef and some biting
observations about life upon
the stage.
Such was the setting of Cafe
Royal, home for Yiddish
royalty, who would douse the
lights on the nearby stages
and then walk over for a
shpritz or two of seltzer and
socializing. Cafe Royal pro-
spered at the corner of Second
Ave. and 12th St. in New York
for some 30 years, as if it own-
ed the concrete it was set in.
In a way, it did.
Those were the days . . .
Cafe Crown, Hy Kraft's velvet
theatrical valentine to the
theatrical cafe, plays upon
reminiscences of a time when
Yiddish theater was not a
term of nostalgia but of a vib-
brant, robust, ongoing
phenomenon. The cafe was
much in tune with the times,
and when its time was up,
Yiddish theater's was seconds
behind.
Return with us to those
days of yesteryear — which is
exactly what Kraft's play
does. It was first produced on-
Broadway in 1942.
Everything smells right
about this play. Maybe it's the
pickles, the rolls stuffed with
corned beef — or maybe it's
that the roles are being
played by such a stellar cast:
Eli Wallach, Anne Jackson,
Bob Dishy, Marilyn Cooper,
Fyvush Finkel and Harry
Goz, all directed by Martin
Charnin, the Tony Award-
winning director, whose hits
include Annie and Lena: A
Lady and Her Music.
Yiddish theater is a dif-
ferent kind of lady, with a dif-
ferent muse and a different
accent. As we all sit and
shmooz over deli delights, the
actors and director delight in
talking about a cafe and a
theater they recall of an era
long gone.
"It was inspiring, all the ac-
tors, the plays, inspiring,"
says Wallach. "The tragedy of
Yiddish theater," he adds, "is
that young people just don't
want to learn the language. It
just withered like a flower. It's
a pity.'
There is more than a touch
of oy vey in Wallach's recollec-
tions and more than a bit of
bitterness that people, Jewish
people, could let such a shan-
da happen. But then,
Wallach, star of stage and
screen, is not a bitter man.
He'd prefer to look on the
bright side, and he brightens
when talking of Cafe Crown:
"This play is a sweet,
touching memory, so affec-
ting."
He should know. He and his
wife, Jackson, are wedded to
good work, which they both
consider this production to be.
