Hava Nedaber Ivrit: Traveling In Israel

Each month in this space,
L'Chayim will present a Hebrew
lesson entitled, "Hava Nedaber
Ivrit!" (Let's Speak Hebrew), whose
aim is to encourage further study of
Hebrew. The lesson will include a
brief story utilizing the Hebrew
words to be studied, a vocabulary
list with English translations and a
family activity which involves using
the new words. The lessons will be
prepared by Nira Lev, associate
professor of Hebrew language and
literature at the Midrasha College of
Jewish Studies. Mrs. Lev also
teaches Hebrew language and
literature at the Community Jewish
High School at the United Hebrew
Schools.
Following is this month's
lesson:
It is always hard for mispahat

Yisrael eretz ktana but it is a
gan eden for tayareem. It has
hareem and ye'arot in the tzafon,
in the Galil. It has a sea ha-yam
ha-tihon in the ma-aray. It has a
midbar, ha-Negev in the darom.
Israel, one of the oldest
coutries in the world, boasts a large
number of mekomot atikeem, as
well as areem gdolot and
moderniyot, with busy streets
teeming with anasheem and many
cultural and leisure activities. In
spite of its small size (Israel is
about the size of New Jersey), Israel
can offer harbe mekomot of high
interest, a living lesson of historia
yehudit, atika and modernit, as
well as mekomot of beautiful teva
of mystic majesty.
Although Yisrael cannot boast
hareem g'voheem, it can show off
the world's cellar: Yam Ha-melah is
about 1,300 feet below sea level,
the lowest spot on the earth's
surface.
Teeyool B'Yisrael is an exciting
shee-oor in historia yehudit.
Wherever you go, you follow the
steps of. your forefathers, and you
are transported to Biblical times,
times of ancient history, side by side
with the modern period of the
rebirth of our medinah. But Yisrael
is not only a place of mekomot
historiyeem and hafirot
archeologiyot. Yisrael is also a
place of fun and activity for any

tayar. You can enjoy the hofeem
and all kinds of sport mayim year
round in Eilat, or the park mayim
on hof Kineret. You can enjoy the
night life of Tel Aviv with its tayclet,

its theaters, symphony and many
cafes and misadot.
You can enjoy old Jaffa with its
many art galleries and quaint shops
and beautiful view. You can ski on
Har Hermon in winter and even go
rock climbing near Jericho. You can
volunteer to participate in a Hafeera
archeologit or spend some time on
a kibbutz and experience this
unique way of life.
