Local Agencies Package Special 'Jewish' Tours As part of a community-wide fair, "Jewish Travel Destinations," to be held February 19, 1989, at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, a group of area agencies has created several packages tailored for the Detroit Jewish community. Here is a sampling of some of the packages that will be offered before, during and after the fair: A Sephardic Journey Gateway Travel has designed a trip to Spain with accommodations in deluxe hotels in Madrid, Seville, Cordoba, Marbella and Barcelona. The package price includes airfare from Detroit, 14 nights hotel accommodations, deluxe bus transportation with English-speaking guides, continental breakfast, transfers and porterage. The price, based on double occupancy, is approximately $2,399 per person. A Jewish History Cruise Travel Unlimited suggests crusing to learn about Jewish communities in remote islands. The islands are uniquely interesting and boast Jewish heritage. The Dominican Republic has a large Jewish population which resides in Santo Domingo. Ancestry dates back to 1497, to Columbus. Its artifacts have Stars of David on them. Danes, Russians, Cubans, and German Jews, have settled there. The U.S. Virgin Islands have Jewish cemeteries, sites and restaurants. Unlike other Caribbean territories, the islands have had Jewish governors. Curacao and St. Thomas' Jewish history date back to the 17th Century and boast some of the oldest synagogues in Western Hemisphere. Puerto Rico has a Jewish community center and the largest Jewish population in the Caribbean. San Juan has a B'nai B'rith lodge, Conservative and Reform synagogues. The weekly cruise leaves on Sunday and shomer Shabbat travelers can be accommodated. Kosher meals can be ordered on board. The price is about $2800 for a family of four. Switzerland In May Jules Doneson Travel Agency Inc. has a trip to Switzerland available in May. Spend two days in Zurich and stay at a hotel of your choice. From Zurich take a three-hour train ride to Lugano where you can see the most beautiful panoramic view of Lake Lugano and the French and Swiss Alps. From Lugano take a side trip to Venice for a couple of days by train or by car. One must take a ride in the canal on the gondola. From Venice return to Switzerland and go by train to Grindelwald and stay at the Silberhorn Kosher Hotel. The total round-trip air fare from Detroit (midweek) is about $690 per person. Hotel rates are subject to change. Portugese Synagogue in Lisbon. Concord Family Trip Elkin Travel Inc. has planned a Jewish family tour to the Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha Lake, N.Y., for July 15-22. The trip includes: eight days and seven nights accommodations at the Concord Resort Hotel in superior rooms, three meals served daily, nightly entertainment and dancing, complete children's program, use of all resort facilities, complete activity program. Adult price is $750 per person, double occupancy. Price for children (under 12) sharing with two adutls is $322. For children (over 12) sharing with two adults, the fee is $385. Round-trip airfare from Detroit and round-trip transfers between the airport in New York and the Concord Resort Hotel is $275 per person, additional. Airfare based on currnet rate and is subject to change. Silberhorn Kosher Hotel in Gindelwald, Switzerland. Toronto and Niagara Falls Berkley Tours and Travel, Inc. has designed a four-day Toronto-Niagara Falls trip for a family of four. Depart for Toronto which is about a four-hour drive from Detroit. Plan a meal stop in London, and arrive at any one of the numerous hotels in Toronto. Prices range from around $75 (Canadian) to over $100 (Canadian) per room per night. Shop at Eaton Centre, Yorkville, the miles of underground shops and ride the subway. Many kosher restaurants are available. Plan a city tour which can include "Jewish Toronto" (ask the hotel for help in arranging). Visit the C.N. Tower, the magnificent science center or visit Ontario Place. Wonderland Amusement Park is a must for children visiting Toronto! Drive to Niagara Falls, about a one-hour drive from Toronto. Have lunch at the Skylon Tower Revolving Restaurant.
