Ancient Sukkah
Is Auctioned

Amsterdam (JTA) — A
hand-painted sukkah dating
from around 1800 fetched
$220,000 last week at an auc-
tion of Judaica at Christie's
Amsterdam.
It was the highest price bid
for any of the hundreds of
items, but considerably less
than expected for the decora-
tive tabernacle, which may
have originated in southern
Germany or in Austria.
In fact, only 10 percent of
the lots drew bids of $5,000 or
more.
A 600-year-old Judeo-Ara-
bic astrolabe, a precursor of
the sextant, from Islamic
Spain or North Africa was
sold for $100,000. An il-
luminated Hebrew manu-
script of the Book of Psalms,
written in Bratislava in 1742,
went for $80,000.
A high bid of $42,000
secured a silver gilt menorah
from early 19th century
Russia. For many years, it
belonged to the late president
of Israel, Zalman Shazar. It
was given to him as a gift by
Russian Jews.

Israel's COL
Rises Again

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
cost-of-living index crept up
by 1.6 percent in November,
the Central Bureau of
Statistics said this week.
The price index has risen at
an annual rate of 16 percent
since the start of the year, but
the 25 percent rate rise over
the last three months in-
dicates that inflation in 1988
will be well above last year's
16 percent.

Forces Break Up
Al Fatah Gang

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Security
forces have broken up a
sabotage gang in the Tel Aviv
area. The gang was related to
Al Fatah, the terrorist arm of
the mainstream Palestine
Liberation Organization.
In addition, police arrested
a Jew who is accused of sup-
plying the gang with wea-
pons. He was identified as Eli
Masikha, from Aviel village
near Hadera.
According to the Tel Aviv
police, eight telephone junc-
tion boxes were sabotaged
during November, cutting off
telephone service for thou-
sands of subscribers.
The interrogation of sus-
pects led to the apprehension
of other saboteurs suspected
of arson and spreading oil on
heavily travelled highways to
cause accidents.
