THE RIGHT PRICE! $999 Shamir seems to have become the highest bidder. The Diaspora world has spoken out. Jews throughout the world, in the United States and Canada, South America, in Britain and France and all over Europe, are deeply hurt and angry over what is happening in the political process of Israel. Prime Minister Shamir has given repeated assurances in the past that he will not give in to the extremists and alter the Law of Return. Yet now he is again being put to the test. How much is it worth to be prime minister? What is the cost of political blackmail? When and where will it end? Joseph was the first Dias- pora Jew. He lived in Egypt where 3,000 years later the Sadat administration became the first Arab government to make peace with Israel. Egypt is again entering the diplomatic field after being quarantined by the Arab world. Joseph's sons would be disenfranchised if they lived today and tried to make aliyah. Their mother was not Jewish. Yet Joseph is revered in Jewish circles as one who tried to save his people from famine. - We need another Joseph to arise and save the Jewish state from a different kind of famine. It is a famine of war and violence, of terrorism and revolution, a famine of the spirit that is wasting away the unity of the Jewish people by ultra-Orthodox fanatics who want to disenfranchise all non-Orthodox Jews who do not see as they see, who do not believe what they believe, who would not tolerate pluralism in Israel. How long can this go on before the Jewish people are disunited and disillusioned by their own kinsmen? The partnership that brought Israel and Diaspora Jewry together may be dissolved before our very eyes by the deal Shamir makes for the 18 seats in his coalition. The Nevada Control Board filed a complaint with the gaming commission, its parent organization, recom- mending the license suspen- sion along with a $400,000 fine against Ralph Engelstadt, owner of the Im- perial Palace Hotel and Casino. The Hitler birthday parties featured Nazi marching music, cakes decorated with swastikas and bartenders wearing T-shirts bearing Hitler's picture. The Imperial Palace's print shop also was alleged to have produced bumper stickers saying "Hitler Was Right," that were distributed to employees. The Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a statement last week endorsing the findings of the Nevada Control Board and urged the suspension or revocation of Engelstadt's license. "The irresponsible use of the Imperial Palace facility for the collection of Nazi and Adolf Hitler memorabilia has brought untold grief to Holocaust survivors and angered all people of goodwill who know the fight against racism and bigotry is far from won, even in our society," a Wiesenthal Center official of- ficial said. A hearing will be held ear- ly next year in Carson City, the state capital.
