FRIDAY, DECEMBER

23, 1988

For a man so committed
to conservative Christian
traditions of kostility
toward the Jews it was
bound to be difficult to
delineate the rules of fair
play and to lay down clear
guidelines for Christians.
With laudable individual
exceptions the Jews were
given neither succour nor
support, let alone active
neighbourly love, by either
Catholics or Protestants.
The recorded crime is the
terrifying agony of the
Holocaust. The Deutches
Allgemaines Sonntagsblatt in-
dictment is evidence that
keeps accumulating of an un-
concern by an entire nation
when humanity's heart and
soul were rampaged and
mankind's conscience was
transformed into a gutter.
The confession now heard
invites a new treatment of the
conscience of every human be-
ing. Kristallnacht is the Ger-
man term for what had occur-
red. The humanized factor of
it cries out as a horrification
of its shamefulness. Submis-
sion to such beastialities with
very little to condemn it is
why mankind is always on

trial every time there is the
very mention of
Kristallnacht.

Exposing
Coughlin

T

he American Experi-
ence" televised docu-
mentary about radio
priest Charles E. Coughlin
has much merit as a recollec-
tion of the venom that was in-
jected into social and political
thinking and action by a
Catholic cleric. It merely
alluded to the anti-Semitism
of a rabble rouser who poison-
ed the minds of millions of
listeners to his pi-ograms un-
til he was finally curbed by
the Church and was sent back
to active preaching in his
Royal Oak, Mich., chapel.
Producer Iry Drasnin has
exposed the menance of
Coughlinism properly. It is a
subject of such an immense
hatred that it could not be
covered fully in a single one-
hour program. It needs more
extensive elaboration on the
anti-Semitic aspect of an alar-
ming chapter in American
social-religious-political
experiences.
The Coughlin prejudices
drew many to his bigoted
ranks; there was so much
hatred broadcast by the radio
priest that the Church was
hesitant to curb him. The
road that led to it is another
chapter in that experience.
