t was a cry for freedom.
"Irina," by Dafna Soltes,
tells the story of a prima
ballerina in the Bolshoi
•
Ballet who falls from grace
when she begins to seek ar-
tistic and religious freedom.
Soltes acted, sang and danc-
ed "Irina" during the Human
Rights Plea for Soviet Jews,
held this past Sunday at Con-
gregation B'nai David. More
than 200 people atended the
performance which was co-
convened by the Jewish Com-
munity Council's Soviet
Jewry Committee and
Women's American ORT.
Soltes, who lives in New
York, said "Irina" was in-
spired by her 1976 visit to the

Soviet Union. She was so
moved by the struggle of the
refuseniks that she had what
she called "a major life ex-
perience?'
The audience, composed
largely of Soviet Jews and in-
dividuals with relatives liv-
ing in the Soviet Union was
noticeably moved by the play.
Polina Brayman, a Soviet
emigre who has lived in
Detroit for eight years, said,
"This story is a beautiful one
told by a beautiful performer.
It is sentimental and
courageous. It is the story of
us all." Brayman, who
teaches English at the Jewish
Community Center to other
emigrees, has two sisters liv-
ing in Kiev.
Leah Shuyn, another
ill" emigre expressed her ap-
preciation for the perfor-

"I thank America every day,"
she said.
At the end of "Irina,"

JCCouncil Vice President
Jeannie Weiner asked the au-
dience to take an aggressive
stand in aiding in the release
of refuseniks. People were
asked to take symbolic ac-

tions such as "adopting" a
Soviet Jewish family, twinn-

ing b'nai mitzvot with a

refusenik youth and writing
officials about the plight of
Soviet Jewry.
While the recent release of

several prominent Soviet
Jews was celebrated during

the plea, JCCouncil President
Paul Borman noted that

many refuseniks are still be-
ing denied exit visas.
"We will not rest until all
Jews wanting to emigrate can
emigrate," he said.
