SOCIETY'

New York (JTA) — The need
for Russian-speaking rabbis,
educators and social and com-
munity workers to serve
Soviet Jewish emigre com-
munities has prompted the
Memorial Foundation for
Jewish Culture to institute
an annual $5,000 scholarship
program.
An estimated 500,000
Soviet Jews, including
children born to them since
leaving the Soviet Union, live
in Israel, the United States
and other countries, explain-
ed Lord Jakobovits, chief rab-
bi of the British Com-
monwealth and president of
the foundation.
"They need rabbis, cantors,
shochtim and mohalim," he
said. "Our goal is to en-
courage more men and
women from their own ranks
to enter careers serving the
community of which they are
a part."
The foundation is especial-

ly interested in Russian-
speaking students training
for careers as Jewish
educators. Deadline for ap-
plications is Jan. 31. For in-
formation, write the
Memorial Foundation for
Jewish Culture, 15 E. 26th
St., New York, N.Y. 10010.
