traffic jams, I'm gift wrapp-
ing," said Julie after five
hours on her feet in the booth.
"But this is so much more
community oriented than the
big-city temples?" Julie never
expected to be part of the
Traverse City Christmas
spirit. But she spent all of
Monday night up to her ears
in wrapping paper. Why? "In
order to keep the rabbi, they
need the funds. So here I am?'
While the Christmas gift-
wrap is the lifeline of Beth El,
Rabbi Arnie Sleutelberg sees
it as more than just a fund-
raiser. "It's a service to the
non-Jewish community," says
the rabbi, who spends every
other Friday with, a congrega-
tion in Troy. (Not even the
gift-wrap program brings in
enough for a full-time rabbi.)
"We're pleased that as Jews
we're able to help our non-
Jewish neighbors?'

Jews, Catholics
To Convene
New York (JTA) — Jews and
Catholics will gather at a con-
ference in February to ex-
amine the Christian roots of
anti-Semitism, according to
Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum,
chairman of the International
Jewish Committee for Inter-
faith Consultations.
The conference is expected
to initiate work on a Vatican
document that will challenge
Catholic teachings world-
wide.
The conclave, scheduled to
take place Feb. 20 through 24
in Zurich, is expected to be
the first of several meetings
to discuss the development of
Christian thinking from ear-
ly days to present times, in-
cluding how it bears on anti-
Semitism and its relation to
the Holocaust.
The conference is an
outgrowth of a meeting held
in Miami on Sept. 11, 1987,
between Pope John Paul II
and 206 Jewish leaders. Soon
after, a joint Jewish Vatican
conference to explore the
roots of Christian anti-
Semitism was approved by
the pope.
The conference is condi-
tional on the removal of a
Carmelite convent at
Auschwitz to a center away
from the Auschwitz grounds.
Members of the international
committee, the body involved
in Vatican-Jewish negotia-
tions, said the move must be
made before Feb. 20.
