Robert J. Gordon, local
president of the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai
Brith (ADL) noted, "Several
of the TORCH members made
statements which suggest
that they are going to active-
ly try to replace those board
members, particularly the
Jewish Board members, who
disagree with them in next
year's election."
Added Woody Sandweiss,
executive director of the
Detroit Chapter of American
Jewish Committee, "We are
not anti-Christmas, but we
want to retain the separation
between church and state, the
principle in which the
pluralism of the United
States was founded."
To Jain Lauter, the torch
appeared to be flickering but
was not yet extinguished.
Lauter, who was present at
the last board meeting, notic-
ed that TORCH members
have since taken a more
moderate stand.
Richard Lobenthal, Michi-
gan regional director of the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai Brith, added, "I am not
persuaded that TORCH's
moderate view was anything
other than an overlay (a
cosmetic), disguising some of
the basic anti-Semitism in
the government."

Groups Begin
Bracelet Drive

Washington, D.C. — B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundations, in
cooperation with the World
Union of Jewish Students
(WUJS) and the American
Association for Ethiopian
Jews (AAEJ), have begun an
Ethiopian Jewry Bracelet
Campaign to heighten
worldwide awareness of the
plight of Ethiopian Jewry. As
many as 10,000-15,000 Ethio-
pian Jews still remain
separated from their family
members who have reached
Israel.
The silver and leather
bracelets are engraved in
English, Hebrew and
Amharic with "Beta Yisrael"
("The House of Israel," as the
Ethiopian Jewish community
is known). On the reverse side
is the inscription, "Reunify
Ethiopian Jewry!"
All proceeds from the
bracelets will go towards the
campaign for the rescue and
relief of Jews stranded and
waiting in Ethiopia. For infor-
mation, contact the B'nai
B'rith Hillel Foundations.
