Rosensaft Will
Not Resign
•New York (JTA) —
Menachem Rosensaft, one of
the five American Jews who
met two weeks ago with
Palestine
Liberation
Organization chairman Yasir
Arafat in Stockholm, will not
be asked to resign as presi-.
dent of the Labor Zionist
Alliance.
At a meeting held Saturday
night inBaltimore, members
of the LZA's National Ex-
ecutive Committee voted
12-5, with four abstentions, to
reject a resolution calling for
his resignation.
The committee resisted a
call for Rosensaft's resigna-
tion from Yechiel Leket,
chairman of the World
Federation of Labor Zionists,
of which the LZA is a
member.
Instead, the committee ac-
cepted Rosensaft's apology for
not having consulted with the
leadership of LZA or the
Labor Zionist leadership in
Israel before taking part in
the controversial meeting
with Arafat.
The meeeting was planned
by officers in the Interna-
tional Center for Peace in the
Middle East.

When a stranger recently
congratulated me on the
street for not wearing a kip-
pah, I felt even my own bald
pate was being conscripted in-
to service in a kulturkampf.
My "supporter" was not in-
terested in my soul-searching.
He was only interested in
knowing if I was on his side
or theirs.
It may be naive and un-
fashionable today to talk of
the Zionist dream, of national
unity, brotherhood, justice
and human rights, but I
believe these must still be our
goals. There must be a way
for us and our political
leaders to pull together,
despite differences, for the
common good.
Perhaps a system of direct,
personal election of the chief
executive, and the separation
of the executive from the leg-
islative branch of govern-
ment, will eliminate the
temptation to sell one's soul
for a portfolio. But, ultimate-
ly, it will be our resolve to
stretch a hand to each other,
and our ability to see our-
selves in every face around us
— religious, secular, Ethiop-
ian, Russian, Ashkenazi and
Sephardi — which will truly
bring us to the promised
land.
