dle. The MSA, they said, had to reprimand Tagar but also give them a way out. But the seemingly punitive nature of the demands didn't go unnoticed. A number of Jewish students who disagree with Tagar politically took ex- ception to the manner in which the incident was han- dled. "I think the demands were done for political reasons," said Gil Renberg. "The whole situation, unfor- tunately, has gotten out of hand because of hypersen- sitivity of certain groups on campus." Others were more pointed. "The Palestinians had a little victory," said one observer. Ac- cording to Laura Cibul, Tagar has appealed to the Central Student Judiciary. "By stay- ing active we're showing peo- ple that we're here whether they like it or not," she said. "For years we've had meetings of one side or another where everybody was defending their position," ex- plains Bob Hauert, director of the U-M Office of Ethics and Religion. "But now, in some ways, it seems that even though the range of the view- points is richer, it's less polarized." Hauert believes the students recognize that the issues are more complicated than they first appeared. Even though the dialogue gets hotter, Hauert sees some good resulting from it. "There's a conversation going on; and people have discovered that the conversa- tion is more complicated. That's a step ahead." Hauert isn't the only one who thinks so. Recently a number of Arab and Jewish students — about 25 in all — formally joined together in a group called "The Middle East Dialogue." "It's .a forum where people can talk," said Libby Adler, who is a member. "There are Arabs and Jews together. Peace isn't just something governments work toward."
