Some historians suggest that these two entrances — one for the Jews of Endingen and one for the Jews of Lengnau — are reminders of a local dispute between the towns. Eventually, the gate to the cemetery opened. We walked among the rows upon rows of old, barely legible stones. We passed the section of the burial grounds reserved for women who died in childbrith. One of the young men ex- plained that they were from Luzern. Some had come to pay respects to their long- dead ancestors. Some were hoping to find the gravestones of relatives. I, somewhat guiltily took photographs of the men as they walked through the grass and knelt over the stones, sometimes clearing away moss that had grown on the headstones. Daylight was turning to dusk, and my hus- band and I had to find a place to spend the night. We started walking towards our car. "Did you take pictures of us?" one of the men asked. "Yes," I answered meekly, hoping they weren't offened. "Good," he replied. "It's im- portant that people know that young Jews haven't forgot- ten." There were two doors. And then two gates. Now two Jews said goodbye in the dark woods filled with the past. ❑ Fresh Air.
