Third St. Royal Oak The liver can manufacture all the cholesterol the body needs. Cholesterol is also found in eggs, fatty meats, but- ter, and whole milk. Levels of cholesterol in the blood at any one time are determined by both diet and by body chemistry. High blood cholesterol is linked with hardening of the arteries. Fat and cholesterol can build up on the artery walls, eventually restricting blood flow. Ultimately this pro- cess can cut off blood supply to various areas of the body such as the heart and brain leading to a heart attack or stroke, respectively. Studies have shown that heart disease deaths are increased when levels are above 180. Treat- ment is usually recommended when levels are greater than 200. There are non-prescription, as well as, prescription medica- tions available to lower cholesterol by various means. And yet, the cornerstone of treatment and control is the cut- ting down on red meats, organ meats (liver and kidney), egg yolks, ice cream, butter and whole milk. The way the foods are prepared is also of importance. Focus on foods that are broiled, poached, steamed or stir-fried in vegetable oil. Stay away from food items with palm or coconut oils. Also, remember before starting any non- prescription method of cholesterol reduction you should contact your physician or pharmacist. We accept Blue Cross and many others. 5548 Drake at Walnut Lake W. Bloomfield 661-0774 2 00 OFF . NEW OR REFILL PRESCRIPTION. ••••••11 FROM ANOTHER PHARMACY.
