are circulated throughout the
country." Officials estimate
that 85 cents out of every
tourist dollar stay inside
Israel.
At the Travel Fair, Dana
McGuire, a Pan Am account
manager, said she "hadn't
noticed a decrease in travel
from Detroit to Israel" in
1988. "We have been filling
all seats and expect travel to
remain high through the cur-
rent holiday season."
Pan Am and TWA fly daily
flights to Israel from Detroit
Metro with stops in New York
and Paris. El Al flies from
New York daily with a stop in
London.
At the Goldstein Travel
booth, agents said they did
not have cancellations this
year except from two elderly
ladies. Agents at the Jules
Doneson Travel booth also
reported that bookings did
not drop this year.
At a display set up by
Berkley Iburs, Sara Lee Segel
said, "I'm booking as many
people as I always did. I'm
sending a lot of first timers. If
you say tourism is down, you
have to look at the entire
region. Mediterranean
cruises, for example, were
almost empty this year. It's
not the uprising but ter-
rorism in general that scared
off some tourists."

One reason tourists still
choose Israel as their destina-
tion, said Pan Am's McGuire,
is because Israel is a better
bargain. "A trip to Israel is

actually less expensive than
a trip to Rome," she said.
Travel experts say hotel
rooms are generally less ex-
pensive in Israel than in-
Europe. They also emphasize
that because the dollar and
shekel values are linked, real-
dollar rates on trips and ser-
vices do not fluctuate.
Clara Sabin of Detroit,
visiting the fair, said she was
planning a first trip to Israel
next November. "I know peo-
ple who live in Israel or who
visited," Sabin said, "and
what we see on TV about the
rioting is not what day-to-day
life is really like. The main
message is that they need
torusits, and that's one of the
reasons I want to go."
Scott Morganthau of
Highland, who has never
been to Israel, said he wanted
to travel now after visiting
the Travel Fair exhibition.
Detroit News columnist and
former travel writer George
Cantor was among those who
spoke to the audience. He
said, "Seeing Israel firsthand
is an incomparable emotional
experience. You come in con-
tact with the roots of the
world's major religions. It is a
staggering feeling. It's a life
changing experience.
"You go over thinking you
will be immune from all that,
but it hits you no matter who
you are."
Cantor compared Israel's
current image problems to
Detroit's. "Both have to sell
themselves to tourists. When
they do, it really works."

Israel Offers Vacationers
Variety Of Activities

Jerusalem — All that Israel
has to offer vacationers is
within a radius of 8,108
square miles — roughly the
size of the state of New Jersey.
Tel Aviv, best described as
Israel's pulsating center, is
the economic and cultural
capital of Israel. What was
merely desolate sand dunes
less than a century ago is
now a thriving city humming
with activity. While Tel Aviv
is cosmopolitan, it is also Is-
rael's Mediterranean metrop-
olis offering visitors a long
stretch of beach and the
breathtaking coastline of the
Mediterranean sea.
Tel Aviv is known as the
"biggest little city" in the
world as visitors are able to
enjoy a wide range of ac-
tivities including sports,
shopping, arts, music, dining,

nightlife — and a temperate
climate year-round.
Tel Aviv was merged with
the city of Jaffa in 1950 and
is now officially referred to as
ml Aviv-Jaffa. Jaffa, one of
the world's most ancient
ports, is now the home of an
artists colony, art galleries,
crafts shops, restaurants and
night clubs. For many, Jaffa is
the place to experience
Israel's vibrant nightlife.
About 50 miles further
north is the city of Haifa — a
village that at the time of its
destruction in the mid-18th
Century had less than 250 in-
habitants. Today it is Israel's
third largest city home to two
major universities — the
Technion and Haifa
University.
The name Haifa translates
into a Hebrew contraction —
