Otto Herschmann, an Olym-
pic medalist in swimming at
the first modern Olympic
Games in 1896, and in fenc-
ing at the 1912 Games; Olym-
pic fencers Grigory Kriss,
USSR, silver medalist in epee
in the 1972 Games, and Dr.
Ozkar Gerde, Hungary, gold
medalist in both the 1908 and
1912 Olympics in the team
sabre event; Algerian boxing
great Alphonse Halimi,
World Bantamweight titleist
from 1957-59; and German
gymnast Felix Flatow, a pace-
setter in gymnastics who won
two gold medals at the 1896
Olympic Games, complete the
roster.
The Hall of Fame also
names outstanding con-
tributors to sports to its Pillar
of Achievement each year,
and two Americans are
among the six elected in
1989. They are Gladys
Heldman, founder of Tennis
Magazine and longtime con-
tributor to the sport of tennis;
and Fred Schmertz, an in-
novator and pioneer of
American indoor track and
field, and founder of New
York's Melrose Games Indoor
Track Meet. Others elected
are Massimo Dell Pergola-
Italy, Oscar State-Great Bri-
tain, Arthur Takac-Yugosla-
via and Joseph Inbar-Israel.
The International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame, celebrat-
ing its 10th anniversary in
July 1989, is located in
Netanya, Israel, on the cam-
pus of the Wingate Institute
for Physical Education and
Culture. 116 athletes and of-
ficials have been elected.

Justin Duberman, one of
the stars of the Detroit Junior
A Compuware hockey team
last season, is playing as a
freshman at the University of
North Dakota. Duberman, a
forward, had one goal and one
assist in his first 14 games for
the Fighting Sioux.
North Dakota will play in
the Great Lakes Invitational
Tournament, Dec. 29-30 at
Joe Louis Arena.

Braun Takes
Maccabiah Job

Eastern Michigan Universi-
ty basketball coach Ben
Braun has accepted the head
coaching job with the U.S.
Maccabiah basketball team
for 1989. Assistant coaches
and player tryout dates will
be announced later. The

games take place in Israel,
July 3-13.
Braun, 35, is in his fourth
year at EMU. The Hurons
were 22-8 last year, winning
the Midwest Athletic Con-
ference title with a 14-2
mark. The Hurons began the
year with four straight wins.
Braun's record at Eastern,
entering this season, was
45-33. Braun was 148-103
during eight years as head
coach of Siena Heights Col-
lege, for a 193-136 college
coaching mark for 11 full
seasons.
