joyed good relations with the
pro-Israel community. More
important, he is a proven
fund raiser who should have
no trouble raising the money
to mount an all-out assault on
Boschwitz.
And Minnesota is one of the
most liberal states in the na-
tion; Boschwitz, a Reagan
Republican, is something of
an anomaly in his own state.
Early reports suggest that
pro-Israel PACs will general-
ly hold to their "incumbents
first" policy in a Boschwitz-
Mondale race.
Among Jewish voters,
Boschwitz may be hurt by his
close association with the
Lubavitch movement.

A Possibility For
DNC Top Spot

Also on the political front,
the race for the chairmanship
of the Democratic National
Committee (DNC) may stir up
some of the anxieties
generated during last
spring's Democratic pri-
maries.
Washington insiders are
awarding frontrunner status
to Ronald H. Brown, the

Washington political activist
with close ties to former can-
didate Jesse Jackson.
But Brown is facing strong
opposition for the post — and
file strongest challenge is
coming from Richard Wiener,
a Michigan Jewish activist
who is closely associated with
a major pro-Israel PAC.
Also in the race are three
former members of Congress
— Michael Barnes of Mary-
land, James V. Stanton of
Ohio • and James R. Jones,
who represented Oklahoma.
Jewish Democratic leaders
are working to downplay the
black-Jewish angle to the
race, and emphasizing the

Washington (JTA) — Yassir
Arafat continues to be ambig-
uous about whether the Pal-
estine Liberation Organiza-
tion accepts Israel's right to
exist, according to President
Reagan.
In a nationally televised
news conference last week,
Reagan supported Secretary
of State George Shultz's con-
tention that PLO leader Ara-
fat has hedged on recognition
of Israel's right to exist, both
at . the Palestine National
Council meeting in Algiers
last month and after his
meeting with five American
Jews in Stockholm laSt week.
Reagan said that at first the
joint statement Arafat and
the five American Jews
released Dec. 7 appeared
"clean-cut."
But, he added, that at a
news conference in Stockholm
after the statement was re-
leased, Arafat again "left
openings for himself where he
can deny that he meant this
or meant that."

on a number of campaigns.
And Wiener's supporters
are de-emphasizing his ties to
the Jewish community; poli-
ticos on both sides of the bat-
tie are working overtime to
keep the issue from driving
new wedges between Jewish
and black Democrats.
